86 f150 Rear end Problem?

I have a 1986 F150 2wheel drive long bed P/U truck.It has a ten bolt
carrier rear end.Will I have to take it out to see how many splines are
on the axels first,or can I just go to the junk yard and get one from a
large Ford car?I can't find a tag on it no where and it has a loud hum
in it at a certain speed,also I need to get a higher speed one for gas
mileage?Can some one tell me what my options are?Thanks for any

Are you sure it's bad? Any one of several things could cause a "loud
hum"... U joints, tires, etc.

Yes, parts are much cheaper than whole axles. A loud hum could be as simple
as low on gear lube. Only way to know what's wrong is to find out.

Lot's of options for gearsets, the right one depends on the engine, tranny,
and intended use. Here's some links:

I believe all of the 8.8 truck axles came with 31 splines. Starting in '87
the axles used a larger pin in the carrier, slightly shorter axle shafts,
and a different sized center hole for the brake drums. If you get junkyard
parts remember to measure twice and purchase once.

I checked the gear oil,it's full.It has a hum in it above 30 mph when I
hold a slight pressure on acclerator,it can't be heard when i'm off the
petal or coasting.When I had it state inspected I told the mechanic to
insp.the gear oil in the rearend,I checked it a couple days later and I
poured a whole quart in it,hadn't driven it but a couple miles.Also it
does have a right seal leak that I need to fix.So I'll check it when I
tear it down.I Just wanted to know what to expect.I know about pulling
the rear cover and clip rings that holds the axels,but thats about
all.Anything you can help me with further is greatly appreciated?Thanks
