Are you sure it's bad? Any one of several things could cause a "loud
hum"... U joints, tires, etc.

Yes, parts are much cheaper than whole axles. A loud hum could be as simple
as low on gear lube. Only way to know what's wrong is to find out.

I believe all of the 8.8 truck axles came with 31 splines. Starting in '87
the axles used a larger pin in the carrier, slightly shorter axle shafts,
and a different sized center hole for the brake drums. If you get junkyard
parts remember to measure twice and purchase once.
