Hey Gang,

I've got a question about my '02 Z71 with 5.3L and 4L60E transmission.
Almost every time, I get a fairly loud clunk in the upshift from 2nd to 3rd.
I've also heard it in the downshift, but it's only between 2nd and 3rd. I
asked my dealer about it and he said not to worry, they're just loud and
clunky transmissions on the 4WD chevys. Do you guys agree with this? It is
kind of disconcerting to be hearing this clunk from the get-go.

Thanks...

... Tim Dixon

700's and 4L60E's do NOT normally clunk on the 2-3 or 3-2

once in a while one may clunk on the 3-2 is the sleector is in '3', but not
as a rule

take it to a transmission shop that specializes in trucks

IMHO: I would find another Chevy dealership! The service writer obviously
doesn't have your best interests in mind. I agree with Gary G. The trans
should not "clunk" Good luck

BTW: I think I would drop a note to the regional GM Rep and let them know
about what happened...

Better talk to the SOB's that do the TSB's because that's where this info
is.
Bulletin No.: 01-07-30-042

Date: December, 2001

INFORMATION

Subject:
Information on 2-3 Upshift Clunk Noise

Models:
2002 and Prior Light Duty Trucks

Equipped with 4L60E (RPO M30) or 4L65E (RPO M32) Automatic Transmission

Some vehicles may exhibit a clunk noise that can be heard on a 2-3 upshift.

During a 2-3 upshift, the 2-4 band is released and the 3-4 clutch is
applied. The timing of this shift can cause a momentary torque reversal of
the output shaft that results in a clunk noise. This condition may be worse
on a 4-wheel drive vehicle due to the additional tolerances in the transfer
case. This is a normal condition. No repairs should be attempted.

'momentary torque reversal in output shaft'..........that's a real
knee-slapper !

sounds like so much phlogiston to me

No doubt written by the same moron at GM that said "piston slap is normal, burning 1 quart of oil every 1000 miles is normal".

Momentary torque reversal ...normal condition?

If it's still under warranty, jam it in reverse sometime & tell the
service tech that it was just a "momentary torque reversal".

Then see if they cover it.

I've heard that there is a TSB regarding a new & improved dive shaft yoke,
don't recall if this is at the transmission or differential end. Do you
guys think that if I complain loud enough I can get this looked at?

Thanks to all for the info already given and thanks in advance for any
additional advice...

Tim,

I had this done on my 2001 GMC 1/2 ton. The part is a F0060 slip joint,
propeller shaft (between trans and rear diff. They also replaced a yoke, part
number 12477702.
This worked for awhile. Now, the shifts are as harsh as ever. I don't know
if it's a bum transmission or just a lot of slack in the drive line. I've owned
quite a few pickups over the years (business), mostly GM's and this is the worst
shifting vehicle I've ever owned. It's worse when towing a light trailer.
I drove in a Ford 1/2 ton for 300 miles that was pulling an 18 foot boat and
the Ford transmission shifted a smooth as glass. But, the Ford seats aren't
nearly as comfortable.

Thanks for the info, Bob. I may pursue these repairs/replacements...
