Shop just called, told me that my 92 ext-cab chevy truck has two broken
motor mounts. Tried to tell me that the bolts are very difficut to get to
and changing the mounts are not an easy job. He mentioned a special
socket, one of those angle/jointed things, and it was difficult to do if the
car was not on a lift.

I'm very capable shadetree mechanic. How difficult is this job really?
What special tools do I need? Is a motor puller necessary?

Any thoughts are appreciated.

Is it the mounts that are bolted to the frame with the rubber or the ones
bolted to the block? Either one will be a pain in the neck to get to, but
it depends how much time you want to invest in it. You're going to have to
take the motor up somehow, but not out, necessarily. Be sure you keep an
eye on your distributor, so it doesn't end up hitting the firewall when you
lift it up.

The ones in the frame aren't bad if you have a set of offset wrenches -
don't expect to have it done in an hour, though, because it won't happen.

I've had mounts changed out on my 91 K1500 right after the engine
rebuild....basically, undo the mount bolts (the ones that hold the engine in
the vehicle)....disconnect all hoses/wires and lift the engine up 6" or
so...

This will release the block mount from the frame mount, so you can get
yourself in there and remove one (or both). If you're in there, it makes
sense to change it ALL out.

Unless I'm mistaken but you can't go six inches with the motor hooked to the
bellhousing. Even if you could, wouldn't there be a distributor
complaining?

If you disconnect the transmission from its mount, I'm sure 6" will
go....maybe it was 4" but there was a fair bit of clearance between the
mounts when we did it. And out of care, we removed the distributor BEFORE
we lifted anything...

so... Do you really need to go up even 4"? Why not 1"? Are the bolts that
hard to get to?
