what sort of mileage can i expect in either?
any reason I should go with one instead of the other? I understand the
recent 5.7's (since 96) have a problem with leaking coolant.

I would not be afraid to expect at least 2x the life from a 6.5 over a 5.7.
I would see no reason, if maintained properly, to be looking at possibly 3x.
I have seen 6.5 TD motors above 400,000 miles on the odometer.

Dunno about the 5.7, but I've got almost 219K on a 6.2 in a 1984 GMC Sierra
C1500. The body on the truck is almost gone, but the engine and transmission
are both great.
Minimal service has been required, and AFAIK all glow plugs are original
stuff.

It's been a while, but at times I got 25 from the 6.2.

Well, I have had a BIG problem with stretching out alternator belts because
of the stress that is applied on one. I learned a hard lesson about how long
it takes to charge two almost completely discharged 900 ampere batteries in
the dead of winter. (I was much newer to vehicles then and didn't see a
problem since the voltmeter seemed to register some charge.)
Don't scrimp on batteries in the Diesels and keep the contacts clean. You
may well need everything they can give to get the truck started on a cold
enough day. A block heater plugged in for a few hours makes it start as
though it were a spring day. My truck loved to ruin the Interstate
batteries, but I'm getting along fine with the Everstart (Wal-Mart) ones.
There is one serious problem--my '84 would "learn you a good lesson" really
quickly if you didn't respect it while driving in snow or rain or bad
conditions of any sort. The back end was so light that doing a 360 was no
problem in the right time. Of course, the engine is heavy and that can't
really be helped except to add weight in the back.
Other than the mostly minor problems above, the engine just runs and runs
while the truck body falls off around it. If the body were better, I would
expect 400K or even further to be no problem. Some day it will be...
