5.7 gas vs 6.5 diesel

what's the typical lifespan of a 5.7 vs a 6.5?

what sort of mileage can i expect in either?


any reason I should go with one instead of the other? I understand the
recent 5.7's (since 96) have a problem with leaking coolant.

I have a 97 ext cab 4x4 5.7 with 100k on it and i get about 14 in the winter
and 18 to 20 in the summer. I had a coolant leak at 85k (intake gasket) on
not a problem since. The company i work for had 6 chevy trucks with 200k on
the engines and trannys just one engine had to be rebuilt at 190k. Even a
couple of these trucks got 18 to the gallon yet. I hope this helps you

Depends on maintenance and use. A diesel engine is designed to be USED and
to work. If gassers were more dependable than diesels, then we would see
them in semis and farm equipment all the time. Those are the ones that are
time tested.

I would not be afraid to expect at least 2x the life from a 6.5 over a 5.7.
I would see no reason, if maintained properly, to be looking at possibly 3x.
I have seen 6.5 TD motors above 400,000 miles on the odometer.

I've got a '93 3/4 ton Chevy p.u. with 160,000 m. on a 6.5. Have run the
boost up a little on this engine and put in a freer flowing exhaust. Uses
less than 1/2 quart between changes, but I always change oil at 2000. Had a
1/2 ton '85 Chevy pickup with the 6.2 and a Banks turbo with the fuel flow
turned up quite a bit. Had 243,000 m. on it when the son I gave it to
rolled it and totaled it. I did put a rebuilt injection pump, injectors,
timing gears and chain on it about 15,000 before the
wreck, but it was still running good before those parts. Wanted my boy to
have a good reliable truck, so much for that. They're just very, good
reliable engines, in my opinion. Had a '79 GMC 1/2 ton with a gas 350 that
I bought new. Engine was shot at 120,000.

Dunno about the 5.7, but I've got almost 219K on a 6.2 in a 1984 GMC Sierra
C1500. The body on the truck is almost gone, but the engine and transmission
are both great.

Minimal service has been required, and AFAIK all glow plugs are original
stuff.

It's been a while, but at times I got 25 from the 6.2.

Well, I have had a BIG problem with stretching out alternator belts because
of the stress that is applied on one. I learned a hard lesson about how long
it takes to charge two almost completely discharged 900 ampere batteries in
the dead of winter. (I was much newer to vehicles then and didn't see a
problem since the voltmeter seemed to register some charge.)

Don't scrimp on batteries in the Diesels and keep the contacts clean. You
may well need everything they can give to get the truck started on a cold
enough day. A block heater plugged in for a few hours makes it start as
though it were a spring day. My truck loved to ruin the Interstate
batteries, but I'm getting along fine with the Everstart (Wal-Mart) ones.

There is one serious problem--my '84 would "learn you a good lesson" really
quickly if you didn't respect it while driving in snow or rain or bad
conditions of any sort. The back end was so light that doing a 360 was no
problem in the right time. Of course, the engine is heavy and that can't
really be helped except to add weight in the back.

Other than the mostly minor problems above, the engine just runs and runs
while the truck body falls off around it. If the body were better, I would
expect 400K or even further to be no problem. Some day it will be...
