I have a gmc p/u with a 305 with 140,000 miles on it. everyonce in a while,
usually after sitting at a light a while, when i accelerate some bluish/grayish
smoke comes out of the exhaust. I was thinking this may be in the valves? It
doesn't do it often. What should i do?

Im no mechanic just one of those weekend warrior types, but i had a
similar problem and i turned out to be the valve stem seals they are
easy in most cases to change. i think on the chevy they used a little
teflon cap that slides over the valve stem. i could be wrong check
with a mechanic. if your smoke ony happens now and then i would not
worry about it yet just keep an eye on your oil level.

Jeff,

Valve guides and/or seals.

Pull the valve covers and make sure the drain-back holes at the rear inner
corners of the head are not plugged.

If they are, the oil will pool in the rear of the valve covers and get
sucked sown the intake guides

Yep...probably something wrong there...teach yourself not to look in the mirror
when speeding away from stop lights and start buying your oil at Walmart (by
the case).

Hey...it works for me...

not to seem silly...but these things reduce to either gas, water, or oil.
The valves are complicated by things like valve guides which if one is worn/cracked
or otherwise allows a little [ like small ] amount of oil to bypass this seal and
get into the cylinder and be compressed and pushed out like any combusted gas
normally does. It Appears Going Out Your Rear as unusual dark smoke...since it was
partly burnt on the way... The seal that could of done this could be perceptable
or detectable in the morning when you First start up. Oils may have rested at the
seal and seeped through overnight. A small crack will be this way and often be a
nuisance...one not to be alarmed about. If one seal or valve guide is worn then
others may also since you have some mileage on the engine. The seal may be noticed
in this way and examination of all spark plugs may help isolate the problem to a
particular cylinder. A compression test of all cylinders will add essential
information that will address compression ring and oil ring integrity. These tests
are easy to do and not costly at a shop. Finally, consideration is given to the
head gaskets and whether they have a leak which could allow water to pass into the
system. Inspection of the oil in the engine for water mixture. All these things
are easy checks to isolate the potential problems of gas, water and oil.
If I left out some detail...well I'm getting ready to go to sleep...bye..good luck.

If your truck has a pcv value that is going bad, that can cause blue smoke
too. If you haven't replaced it in a while, spend the $5.

Your pcv valve can be cleaned in gasoline or use a strong carburetor cleaner
/solvent
and then put it back... generally these are merely dirty and a good soak in gas
or
a pressurized spray of solvent with a tube on spray-can will restore the valve
to good condition. I don't think this valve is the reason for the smoke you
are seeing...
