Yeah, sort of still around, but busy. This retirement thing isn't
going very well. I seem to be working more now since I went into
"semi-retirement" than I did when I was working full time. Been
spending a lot of time in hotels out of state. By the time I get back
to the room I am too tired to even turn on the TV. Working hours get
crazy too. Like be in the mill for a run on a Hot Strip Mill of all
types of different grades of steel. Each grade calls for a different
mill setup loading up the mill stands quite differently. That makes
for weird working hours to follow the rolling schedule. In the mill
for 3 hours, hotel for 5 hours, back to the mill for 3 or 4 hours,
back to the hotel for 4 hours, and so on throughout the week.
Last weekend I got a call for what sounded like a 1~2 hour fix and go
home. Got home 22 hours later. Sometimes the bear does get you:(
My wife accuses me of saying "No" to her projects but never to one of
my steel mill friends:) What can I say? I still sleep with my cell
phone.... Old habits are hard to break.
Looks like I will be off for a week or two so I hope to get in some
"quality time" fishing. The wife is out of state visiting for a few
days so I have a bit of a vacation:) I went to bed early last night so
I can get the kayak and fishing gear loaded up and be on the water at
sun rise this morning.
Steelhead fishing is picking up nicely on our local river (I live in
the area of Ohio within what is called Steelhead Alley with the Grand
River about 15 minutes from home). On a couple rare afternoons off
over the last month I snuck down to the river and landed a few. I
never seem to tire of tussling with them. A 24"-28" lake run rainbow
trout puts up quite a fight.
Too bad it is a bit late in the season up here to do any relic
hunting. Deer season is coming up soon and I don't fancy being a
pointy headed mount in someone's hunting camp:)
Still trying to find some time to play with the Whites Vision
detector. I haven't had it out on a real hunt yet, it seems like it
will take a bit of getting used to. Besides, there are a whole bunch
of settings to play with to optimize it for my type of hunting.
Trying to switch back and forth between my Fisher F75 and the Whites
Vision is nearly impossible. I'll have to play around a lot before I
finally settle on which one I'll use most. Right now I know how the
F75 responds so feel most comfortable with it. I find myself using the
elliptical 6" coil instead of the stock coil. The smaller coil doesn't
seem to lose much in depth but it sure makes it a lot easier to
pinpoint targets as well as maneuver it around the underbrush and
fallen branches and stuff when hunting in the woods. I sure do wish
that Fisher had the wireless headphones though. The pair that comes
with the White's Vision are great. I did learn they are not a simple
Bluetooth wireless like I use with my cell phone and other toys.
Apparently Bluetooth has some timing lag in it so White's put in a
high speed transmitter receiver so you hear the target just as if you
were connected by wire. Makes a lot of sense to me when trying to
pinpoint a target.
Well, the morning coffee has finished brewing. Time to get a cup then
start gathering up all the fishing gear, sort out some lures, put on
the roof racks, load on the kayak, fill the boat gas tank, load the
kayak accessories, pack a lunch, pack, pack, pack...... Darn, sounds
like a lot of work just to hopefully catch and release a couple fish:)
Maybe I should have planned a trip detecting down in Tennessee or
somewhere for the next couple days:)

Hi Gary,
Well, the fishing day yesterday was a bust. Spent the entire day on
the water without seeing so much as a fish roll. The wind was gusting
way too hard to seriously fish the section of river I prefer.

catch up this way. If anyone fishes freshwater, they'll understand the
thrill of catching these guys. Hook into a dozen or so in a day and
your wrist will be a happy type sore for a week:)
Yesterday I probably should have taken my chances of being a pointy
headed wall mount and gone out with the detector. Better yet, planned
a several day trip south to maybe Tennessee or the Carolina's. On the
brighter side, I wouldn't be able to jump into the car the minute my
cell phone rings:)

PA. PA is one of the few states that still hold to the old "Blue Laws"
for both hunting, and believe it or not, car dealerships are still
prohibited from selling cars on Sundays. I was born and raised in PA.

in mind that I know will produce a few relics from the F&I war period.
So today I'll practice with the Vision (in the back yard) and maybe
take her to the field on Sunday if I can get a little more comfortable
with it.

But I guess we too make as much as we can while we can, but then you

I hear you on the wife and girlfriends. They never think we spend
enough time with them or that we don't want too. I guess maybe
sometimes both are true, but I don't think we mean too be that way. I
personally don't like someone right under me all the time. But I've
never been married and probably don't understand the whole situation.
Speaking of cellphone also, I wish sometimes I could just throw mine
in the trash. If its not family trying see where you are all the time,
its someone calling you wanting you to buy something or the wrong
numbers. It seem sometimes because of that thing I waste a lot of time
getting things done.
I wish I had more time for fishing it seems here lately I've been
spending a lot of time trying too catch up with everything. A few
weeks ago I pick up this weird little fishing pole thing called the
pocket fishermen, can't wait till I get around trying it out. I also
want to take time for metal detecting. Oh and don't get me started on
coils lol, they confuse me more than anything on the machines. Some of
them are to finger out wich part indicates where the coin starts and
end or whatever your going for. But mostly my fault because I leave my
pinpointer at home a lot. I need to just find me a place by a river or
lake one weekend that is know for coins or relic finds and camp out.
That maybe what the doctor orders. lol

I know how you feel about setting on lake all day and not catching
anything. I've done it plenty of times. Just last year I went out on
Lake Lanier with some friends. We say there for 9 hours and caught
nothing. I guess the reason we stayed so long was that we were having
fun talking and enjoying the view. Then out of no wheres we got hit by
a big rain storm and head had to head shelter. One friend ended up
springing his ankle, but he wouldn't go to the hospital. Found out the
next day his girlfriend made him go lol.
We are all planing a camping trip next year in the Appalachians. I
guess we will stay for a week and try our hands at fly fishing. But we
will see if that happens or not. We have had to cancel a few times
before because of family issue or whatever. I might just go by my self
if they don't. Might even try some gold panning up there.
I hope you the best of luck with your relic hunting, I hope you find
something need. Keep us up to date with any finds you make. Like I've
said before. I always look forward to your posts.
