My son will be on Cap Cod over Spring break and I was wondering if it would be
ok for him to take my metal dectector with him to the beach?
They have that pirate museum out in Provencetown and I have heard that
sometimes coins from the sunken "Wydah" come ashore.

Anyone know if he needs some kind of permit, or are there other laws involved?
Mass. sometimes has some strange laws (at least from my perspective), like the
one that will send you to jail for a BB gun in your car trunk. Just don't want
him to get in trouble if there is some draconian anti metal dectecting law in
effect there too.

No special state laws that I know of, but local laws could be harsh. Too many
careless or downright uncaring people have made some bad impressions here and

Your son's best bet would be to get some maps now, and figure out where he
plans on detecting. That way, he can call ahead now to check with the local
town hall/officials for any restrictions. Some beaches have restricted
areas to protect wildlife, prevent dune erosion etc., but these probably
aren't places he'd want to detect anyway.
He should also be aware of the Cape Cod National Seashore out in the P-town
& outer Cape area. The National Park Service officials there can inform him
about what's permited, off limits areas, etc.
