I'm new to the hobby and just purchased a 5900 Di Pro Sl and need some
operating advice. First is ground balancing this machine somewhat difficult
to master or is it just me. I've made sure I'm not around power lines or
trying to balance over metal but find it difficult to get a consistant
threshold hum. It make sense in the manual but in practice is a different
story. Sometimes when ground balancing in GEB Norm and also while
pinpointing it will blare no matter where I point it as if everything is
metal. By the way I'm in Central Ohio, not sure if that helps on my soil
condition. Also while in GEB DISC mode should it operate silent or should
there be a slight threshold hum? Does the video on the model 5900 contain
valuable info for a new user not contained in the manual? Lastly is there
any clubs near the Lancaster, Ohio area where I might obtain some hands on
instruction? Sorry about the bombardment of questions, a true newbie here.

Thanks in Advance,
Mike

I remember trying to ground balance my White's for the first time... Are
you pulling the pinpoint trigger (or pushing the button, whichever) and
releasing it after turning the ground balance control? Do this before you
lower the coil to the ground again. It shouldn't take too much deviation
from the preset mark to ground balance.

My 6000 Di used to blare for no reason, also. It would be fine for a while
then would go nuts and be unusable. I solved that problem by taking the
cover off and spraying some electrical contact cleaner into the ground
balance control. I have some really good stuff from Caig Labs that I'm going
to use on my machine. It's especially made for cleaning and lubricating
moving controls like potentiometers, switches, etc. The power booster
cleaner I tried on a corroded battery charger worked like a miracle! Hard to
believe that stuff made badly corroded contacts like new.

Important! Is this machine new or used? If it's under warranty, don't take
it apart!!!

Sorry forgot to mention this is a new machine so I wouldn't think the geb
control would need contact cleaner yet. I'm pulling the trigger too before
lowering the coil after any adjustment. Could this be a defective unit or
do I just need more experience with it to learn all it's idiosyncrasies?

Sorry for the interupt as I'm not a detector operator YET! But I think that I
may see the problem.
Reading Stretches reply and then yours, I see something strange. If I'm
reading correctly, you Pull the trigger, adjust the control, release the
trigger, and then lower the coil to the ground. I used to work in the
underground utility locate field and we had to GB those units too. This seems
like the (above suggestions) right order of things.
It's worth a try, and if I'm out of order, please forgive the intrusion.

Hmmm... Well if you hit and release the trigger after the adjustment,
you're doing it the way I've always done it on my older White's machines.
I've rarely had a "perfect" ground balance, but the tone barely changes as I
lower the coil to the ground. You are in "GEB normal" mode while attempting
to balance, correct? Not around any microwave towers, high tension lines,
buried cables, or the like? Around my area, we have a lot of areas where
burned coal was used as fill... That's impossible to ground balance on (far
as I know). Maybe a fellow detectorist in your area could have a look at
your machine?

Thanks for the help, I'll keep practicing. I seem to be getting it a little
more stable. Must be getting the hang of it. Does anyone know if the video
from White's for the 5900 has any good info beyond what is already in the
owners manual?

Thanks Again,
Mike

You have to pull and hold the trigger while you tune it for the "slight
hum", release the trigger and lower the loop to the ground, if the geb need
adjustment do so and pull the trigger to reset the threshold and lower the
loop again. It may take several tries to get it right. Make sure you ground
balance it in the GEB NORM MODE. I do have a very slight hum when operating
in the GEB DISC mode, I found that the headphones with a volume control help
greatly. You have to have the trigger pulled when tuning for the threshold
or the slight hum won't be so slight. Any other questions feel free to email
me and I will try to answer them, this is the machine I currently use.
