I have two Sears metal detectors, Sears model no. 321.596170, which were
made by White's, and I think they are equivalent to White's Coinmaster older
style 6000DI. I want to get them tuned up and checked out to use so they are
tuned the same. They seem to work more or less correctly, but a little
differently and could probably use a tune up. What does this involve and
what would it cost? Can I get it done locally, or do I have to send them to
White's? I live in Kentucky and my closest service center would be Central
Kentucky Metal Detectors in Nicholasville, KY.

Whites service is legendary.
They service just about every detector they've ever made.
Send it in and the will fix you up.

I sent the same message to White's authorized service center and they said
(We are the only authorized White's service center for your area. Send the
control box, coil and battery holders. Include a note describing the
problem and your phone number and we will call you about one week after
receiving your unit with an estimate. Labor is $45 plus parts and shipping)
that sounds rediclis what to do help...

Whites Factory Service Center is your best bet, There you will get
everything done to the detector to bring it up to operational standards.

You may be able to find someone who can work on the detector but if they
are not authorized by Whites they may or may not have the parts and
experience needed to bring your detector up to standards

Send it in and get the estimate if it turns out to be too high you may
want to think about getting a new detector

Here's an idea: Why don't you call Whites and ASK them. Then you'll know for
SURE what you need to do.
You can find their contact info at www.whiteselectronics.com
I've also found Whites' service to be outstanding. But I hope you don't expect
them to service two old detectors for free.
That would be ridiculous.

I dunno... I think that's very reasonable for an out-of warranty tune-up.
Labor and overhead for any service costs a company money (yes even if is IS
going to White's) and if the machine is out of warranty... I've never dealt
with Whites, but have heard good things about their service. To me - good
service means that you get back a product that performs better than when you
sent it - at a reasonable price. If it's out of warranty (and I don't know
if it is or not - but I'm presuming it is, since you've had it long enough
that you believe that there may be minor tuning issues) you cannot
reasonably expect "free" anything. Some companies will do it sometimes - as
a good-will gesture... but I woudn't *expect* anything for free....

G'Luck with whatever route you choose,

I forgot to menchen that I only paid $100 including shipping for each
metal detector on EBAY. $45x2=90 in Labor + shipping sounds rediclis
gist to have them tuned up. $10-$25 each + shipping not counting parts
would sounds a lot beder. or code I tune up them up myself priddy easy
if sumone told my hale to do it...

$45 plus S/H? Sounds more than reasonable. In today's service
economy, a $45 base fee is way cheap for anything, much less something as
specialized as MD service.

If you are electronically inclined ...

Electrolytic capacitors usually are the problem with old electronics.
They are in little cans with things such as 10uf, 100uf on the side.
Replace all these. Make sure the microfarad (10uf) and voltage (16v) are the
same
and THAT THE POLARITY IS CORRECT. These cans have black strip or
other indicator designating the ground pin. Don't put the new one in
backwards!!!
You can get most at radio shack or www.mouser.com

And, if it's a tube machine, you'll get a real charge out of the caps
if you fail to discharge them first...................
