The best and cheapest way is jetlink coach - very regular service and
reliable.
See their web site - http://www.nationalexpress.com/p.cfm?n=pai-std

Agreed but, the main alternative would be standstead express to London, get
across London, Hetahrow express from Paddington - much more expensive, but
possibly quicker at rush hour ??? or tube(s) from Liverpool street to
Heathrow.

But a prebooked taxi could be good if several of you are travelling
together.

National Express have a non stop service from STN-LHR. Journey time is just
over one hour and a quarter
www.nationalexpress.co.uk
Here is an example itinerary:

Service number 797
London, Stansted Airport, coach station, Essex Depart : 02:10
HEATHROW AIRPORT, central bus station Arrive : 03:30

The quickest and cheapest are going to be different.

Quickest: hire a helicopter
Cheapest: walk

Regarded as the most generally useful compromise by most travellers?

Either the coach, or Stansted Express train, change at Tottenham Hale
for the Victoria line, and at Kings Cross for the Piccadilly.

Or just get a direct bus service - too convenient?

Are there direct buses, as well as the direct coach I mentioned?

No busses, just coaches
