When booking an EasyJet flight today the SO Googled 'easyjet' to
bring up their web site, but the first web site shown by Google was as
above.
(The real Easyjet site was 2nd to be shown. Why 2nd, one wonders...)

Sadly, she didn't spot that what at first sight looked like the Easyjet
site and made her booking, and it was only when the booking
confirmation email arrived that she noticed an extra £80 had been
charged, and that the charge for checkin baggage was higher.

Of course, there are many such trick sites, e.g. for visa's, but what
is nasty about this one is that "Easyjet" is at the beginning of their
URL, something I find surprising that Easyjet allows.

Presumably it's otherwise all legal and nothing to be done.
At least her booking shows up on the real Easyjet site...

Not when I Google 'easyjet' because no such sub-domain of edreams
exists. Typing the URL www.easyjet.edreams.co.uk into a browser
produces a 'Server not found' error.

Correct!

What the SO saw at the top of the Google search result was:

easyJet Cheap Flights - edreams.co.uk
www.easyjet.edreams.co.uk/
Cheap easyJet Tickets are here. Save up to 70% Off your
flights!

which (having seen the misleading 2nd line) she mistook for the Easyjet
site, so clicked on the top line, which took her into the
www.edreams.co.uk web site.

Nasty.

The odd thing is that - on an identical system and using the same level
of browser (Firefox) - I don't get the 'edreams' entry in the Google
search on 'easyjet'...

I've used eDreams before, and they charged 10 EUR. I needed to use
them for complex reasons, but I'm surprised about the extortionate
amount they extracted from you. What a scam! They must have a
special fee for visitors baited to their server by way of a sneaky
hostname.
