My wife and I are flying to Shannon on May 10th for a week and need to
rent a car. Will be driving small roads thru western Ireland. Two
adults with a large suitcase each.

Essentially, the entire rental system is so confusing, so we're looking
for advice.

Five years ago we used Dan Dooley and we had no problems, except they
tried real hard at the counter to sell us every imaginable insurance and
add-on, but most do that...

Has anyone had more or less success with a certain rental company?
Are the on-line rentals accurate?

Any other advice to provide?

Much thanks,

Petey

If you are a resident of the USA or Canada, and you have a gold/platinum
Mastercard, you can use your credit cards auto insurance in Ireland (its the
only card, along with Diners Card, that is accepted for auto rental
insurance) and save yourself a bunch of money. Otherwise be prepared for a
lot of hassle when trying to decline the optional CDW and theft insurance,
they sometimes refuse to rent the car until you accept the extra insurance.
I normally go with whichever of the big worldwide companies have the best
rates at the time, Avis, Thrify or Hertz. Search using Expedia.com or
Sidestep to find our who is offering the best for the dates you are
travelling. The online rates are normally fairly accurate (although Dollar
to Euro conversion can sometimes play a little with the final figure), be
aware of local taxes such as the ?21 tax for airport fees, rental companies
hardly ever quote it until you drop the car off.

Hope this helps

Mike

Far as I can tell, someone wrote:
