Dnk's roadtrip to Wisconsin

Final Destination: Sheboygan

The semi-mythical town of Sheboygan lies along Lake Michigan, about
halfway between Milwakauee to the south and the football mecca of Green
Bay to the north.

Sheboygan, and indeed all of Wisconsin, is pure Americana, so perfectly
average that it looks like it was plucked out of a 1950s TV show. Life
here is mowing lawns, raking leaves, shoveling snow, and watching
football. They love the Green Bay Packers, to the point of obsession,
and the team's logo and colors can be seen on everything. I don't really
care for football, but I watched part of today's game and my buddy was
excited over their win (the only part I liked was watching Aaron Rodgers
and fantasizing about being alone in a sauna with him and a bottle of
thousand island dressing).

Wisconsin is absolutely gorgeous this time of year, one of the best
places in the country to watch the autumn leaves change color. My
national park pass got me into the nearby Kettle Moraine state forest,
which was just a riot of colors, and the Parnell Tower trail has an
observation tower that looks out above the forest canopy. Another
interesting state park is Kohler-Andrae, part of which is a trail
through a delicate sand dune ecosystem on the edge of Lake Michigan.
Some wildflowers are still blooming, others have gone to seed, and
nature looks like it is almost ready for winter.

The nearby towns of Kohler and Plymouth are worth visiting. Kohler is
home of the famous Kohler toilet factory, a charming upscale town that
features lots of interesting late-19th/early-20th century architecture,
wide avenue, and lots of foliage. Plymouth is similar, perhaps a little
older, with a main street dotted with pubs.

Wisconsin is fun and I definitely recommend a visit. Autumn is
beautiful, though my buddy warns that summer is hot and humid and the
winter snow and ice suck.
