The following is a table of the technologies used by the Canadian carriers
and their US equivalents:
Telus/Bell Mobility CDMA Sprint/Verizon/Alltell
Rogers TDMA ATT/Cingular (some cities)/Some Cell
One Properties
Mike iDEN Nextel/Southern Linc
FIDO GSM Voicestream/Cingular (other
cities)/ATT (minority of users)
If you are coming from the US, some providers have Canadian minute plans
that can be temporarily added. ATT offers it to its DOR for US$20 a month -
you can extend your minutes into Canada. Verizon offers it to its Single
Rate customers for $10. Sprint users can buying a roaming bucket of minutes
for $10. Nextel users get very cheap roaming on Mike.
Even if you don't have a phone which you can use, a prepaid kit might be
cheaper. FIDO has the cheapest rates, but does not permit international
calls (US excluded).
