Where are you coming from and who is your carrier back home. If you have an
unlocked phone, it is far cheaper to activate prepaid service with a
Canadian carrier.

The following is a table of the technologies used by the Canadian carriers
and their US equivalents:

Telus/Bell Mobility CDMA Sprint/Verizon/Alltell
Rogers TDMA ATT/Cingular (some cities)/Some Cell
One Properties
Mike iDEN Nextel/Southern Linc
FIDO GSM Voicestream/Cingular (other
cities)/ATT (minority of users)

If you are coming from the US, some providers have Canadian minute plans
that can be temporarily added. ATT offers it to its DOR for US$20 a month -
you can extend your minutes into Canada. Verizon offers it to its Single
Rate customers for $10. Sprint users can buying a roaming bucket of minutes
for $10. Nextel users get very cheap roaming on Mike.

Even if you don't have a phone which you can use, a prepaid kit might be
cheaper. FIDO has the cheapest rates, but does not permit international
calls (US excluded).

If you still have your heart on renting, check out roadpost.com.

Thanks, we're coming from the Netherlands, Europe. So we cannot bring our
own phones.
As we have a sick relative we would like to be reachable any time. I will
check out roadpost.com.
Thx
