Stayed in Vancouver - Stanley Park is a must. If you can, do the sea
wall walk/bike/run around the park. Plenty of hire bikes available.
Check out the all-night book stores too - with Starbucks inside. Water
front is interesting - see the float planes take off amongst the cruise
ships. Get down to False Creek, there you will find the super bowl and
the science dome thingie (can't remember what it's called). Gas Street
is a bit touristy and we were told not to go into China Town.
Enjoy

Be sure to drive up Hollyburn mountain in West Vancouver where the viewpoint
is a sensational (free) panorama of the city, or take the tram up Grouse
Mountain for a similar view. There is a very nice marine scenic drive
through West Vancouver as well. Have lunch at the Beachside cafe and ask
for the crab cakes, yummy!
Granville Island market is fun and lots of nice galleries, etc. Not just
for tourists, we locals really shop there. That's in the False Creek area
near downtown, near where the geodesic Science Centre is.
If you have the time and money, take a seaplane flight over to Victoria for
a day or more ($79 one way) and bus it back on either local transit
(cheaper) or Pacific Stage Lines downtown to downtown including the BC
Ferry. Try and get the odd hour ferry (ie 7, 9, 11am) They are bigger and
have more facilities, such as a buffet in addition to the cafeteria and
coffee counter. The ferry trip is lovely and our ferries are well appointed
with good food. You MUST see the Royal British Columbia Museum in Victoria
and start at the top floor and work your way down. Butchart Gardens and the
Empress are the regular tourist sites, Oak Bay village is charming and the
Marine scenic drive is wonderful, you can rent a scooter downtown to take
it.
Have a White Spot burger & fries while you are here, they are "legendary".
While you are out at the University of BC seeing the Museum of Anthropology,
see the Nitobi Japanese Garden and the Experimental garden.
Japanese food in Vancouver is fabulous, although they are mostly owned by
other than Japanese asians. There is an authentic Japanese Chef sushi
take-out at Park Royal Shopping Centre in West Vancouver, at the West end of
the Mall.
Are you planning to drive to Whistler? It's expensive, but magnificent to
see from the top of the Tram. You can do it in a day, The drive is 1 1/2
hours north of Vancouver.
Have a great time in Vancouver, you can ski in the morning and sail or play
tennis in the afternoon!

Yes, Gastown is "a bit touristy" -- that seems to be why the tourists
love it!
Some good shopping, some bad. A couple of decent native crafts stores. Some
very good food, some bad. You can probably get an irresistible deal on a Persian
rug, if you just can't wait -- and if you can figure out how to get it back home!
Chinatown is wonderful -- good food, an interesting Chinese Cultural Centre, and
a wonderful traditional Chinese walled garden.
And always safe.
Science World is always worth a visit, and your hotel can tell you about sports
and entertainment at BC Place Stadium, General Motors Place, Queen Elizabeth
Theatre, The Playhouse Theatre ands the new Centre In Vancouver For The
Performing Arts.
You can get a bus or a carriage tour around Stanley Park, ride on a miniature
railway, take the kids to the animal farm, eat in a couple of very good
restaurants, go to the Aquarium, or watch a weekend cricket match in suspended
time.
Enjoy!

Thanks for this.
Visiting again 2003 - hopefully.
I won't be listening to the next hotel manager who tells me again not to
go there.

hmm, Chinatown, around Hastings & Main? Safe, MAYBE, but not
harrassment-free these days

Not new. Just the former Ford Theatre that had been shut for 3+ years
following Livent's demise

Hastings & Main is, sadly, no longer in Chinatown -- if it ever was

and now re-opened by a quartet of surgeons from Denver -- Vancouver is truly a
cosmopolitan city, eh?

that's news to me
