Super Robot Lifeform
It is a world transformed, where things are not as they seem. It is a world
of heroic Autobots, and evil Decepticons. It is a world of the Transformers,
where there is more than meets the eye. Robots assume the shape of cars,
trucks, fighter plans, and spy equipment to wage their secret war as robots
in disguise.
Introduction
From Takara To Hasbro And Back Again!
It's the year 1983. Ronald Reagan is President of the United States. The
Cold War is in full swing. Russia is still the evil empire. The video-game
industry just crashed big- time. And for years, the best thing happening on
television for kids has been the Superfriends.
In Japan, though, a new trend of Giant Robot action has been catching on,
with Gundam sitting on top and selling like mad. Cash-strapped Hasbro
wonders if they can get a giant robot line to succeed in America, and
compete with the Robotech and Voltron series also coming out.
Hasbro looks to another cash-strapped company named 'Takara'. They've had a
few lines of robot toys that were suffering from lackluster sales. One of
these lines was called Diaclone, and featured giant transforming vehicles
that turned into everyday cars. Despite the innovative toys, the manga and
story around the line is uninspired, failing to excite the kids of Japan.
Hasbro gets that line for American release, as well as a few others. But
they don't decide to make the 'story' for the toys themselves. Instead they
turn to Marvel comics, who had given them great success with GI Joe already,
and had also enjoyed critical acclaim for their Spider Man television
series. Hasbro gave Marvel the toys, and told them to make a new and unique
story about them.
What Marvel and Hasbro produced was a four issue comic book, as well as a
three episode miniseries to air on television. In 1984, both were released
and the sales were incredible. The comic was given 'unlimited status', and
the television series was extended for a full syndicated run.
The Transformers were a bona-fide hit. Cools toys with a solid comic and
television show to back them created a monster success, and a legacy that
lives on twenty years after its initial conception.
The First Saga
In its twenty year run, the Transformers mythos has spanned an amazing
number of stories and sagas. Most Americans would be familiar with
Transformers, Transformers: The Movie, Beast Wars, Beast Machines,and, most
recently, Robots in Disguise.Japan adds a half-dozen more television series
to this mythos. Europe adds a couple more comic books, and a two year run of
toys available even in the brief period where American interest in
Transformers had seemed to have run dry.
What started it all was a simple premise. Robot aliens from Cybertron have
been fighting for millions of years, and leave their world in search of
energy. They find it on Earth, crash here, and adopt the forms of local
vehicles to disguise themselves.
Of course, at its base, the concept sounds more than a little cheesy. But
the simple premise allowed for some unusual and solid storytelling, much of
which still holds up long after most cartoons of the period were forgotten.
Marvel had injected strong characters and themes into the stories, lifting
Transformerswell above most of the market of the time.
Tech Specs
One contribution Marvel added to Transformers was a short biography of each
character to have a toy. These biographies were put on the backs of the
cards and boxes of the figures, and gave some of the Transformers story for
kids to play with.
These biographies, or 'tech specs', gave a little bit of information about
the character, what he could do, and some 'game-style' statistics on a
technical-looking bar graph. It may have seemed a minor contribution at the
time, but it was one that endured.
This book, then, is a collection of the tech- specs from the 'first saga'
toys, going from the original crew on the Autobot starship, the Ark, to the
middle of the second year. These characters are the long-time fan favorites,
ranging from Optimus Prime and Megatron, to Omega Supreme and Devastator.
For many still interested in Transformers to this day, these are the
characters that they love the most.
Transformers Oddities
If there is a rule about the Transformers mythos, it's that nothing is
perfect. The tech- specs aren't any different. Sometimes, mistakes crept up
into production. Other times, someone didn't bother creating them for
certain figures. The Transformers mythos has always been a little messy,
even from the very beginning.
This book tries to compile some tech-spec data, correct some errors, and
make everything all nice and neat. The more drastic edits and changes are
explained here.
Skywarp and Starscream
One problem about having two very similar toys is that, occasionally, things
are going to get screwed up. That was pretty telling with these two
Decepticon jets. The two had their tech-spec numerals switch when the toy
packaging went to press, giving Skywarp a sudden promotion. When the trading
cards came out, the specs were corrected. The corrected versions are used in
this book.
Jumpstarters
What might be more confusing than switching the stats on cards is just
switching the images of the toy in the package. The two Jumpstarters, Top
Spin, and Twin Twist, had their images switched on their tech- specs, making
it a little confusing about whom had what abilities. The correct versions of
the specs are given in this book.
The Tyco Racers
Burnvolt and Glowvolt technically were never given names. When TYCO licensed
out the Transformers for the creation of their electronic road race, TYCO
decided not to give tech-specs to either the Autobot or Decepticon races. No
names or other information about the characters were given in the packaging.
Apparently, though, Hasbro did want these characters to have some sort of
'biographical' information, perhaps for possible use in the cartoon or comic
book series. Though these bios were never realized, the tech-specs given in
this book are from Hasbro's notes about these two obscure characters.
The Omnibots
The Autobot characters, Camshaft, Downshift, and Overdrive were not part of
the 'main' Transformers toy line. Instead, fans could purchase them by
sending 'robot points', clip-out coupons on toy-boxes, into Hasbro, Inc.
Since they didn't have standard packaging, the trio of toys did not have
'Tech Specs' with them, at least in the United States. Japan, however, gave
the three Omnibots personalities in their bio write-ups. The tech specs
given in this archive are from the Japanese versions of the characters.
Powerdasher
The 'Powerdasher' actually refers to three very basic toys that were used as
mail-away figures. The advertising blurb for this mail- away said that the
Powerdasher was constantly evolving into different bodies.
In truth, this just meant that Hasbro could ship one of three different
'Powerdasher' toys, depending on what they currently had in stock. Despite
the obviously different toys, Hasbro officially made them all the same
character, and gave a small bio to him.
The tech-spec numbers were supposed to be 'mysterious', and the character
didn't receive anything but 'unknown values', since they would change
depending on what version of the body the fan would be playing with.
Reflector
Reflector was a Decepticon camera that never found its way onto store
shelves in the United States, despite having a version of the character
within the first season of the cartoon.
The toy was initially going to be released like the rest of the Transformers
line, but Hasbro felt that its overall quality was too inferior to make it
widely available. Having paid for the license, and also having included him
in their chief source of advertising, the cartoon series, Hasbro decided to
make Reflector a mail-in giveaway.
Like with the Omnibots, a fan would mail in coupons cut out of Transformers
toy boxes, and mail them into Hasbro. Reflector would arrive by mail a few
weeks later.
Unlike most giveaways, though, Reflector did have tech-specs included on his
instruction sheet, even though the toy form of the character was wildly
different from the cartoon incarnation. Those tech-specs however are given
in this book.
Elita One Model Kit
Elita One was a character featured in the episode Search for Alpha Trion.She
was the female Autobot leader, and didn't have a toy. Despite this, many
fans liked the character, and a 'model kit' of Elita One was created in
Japan several years later. On the box of this model kit was a tech-spec
sheet, just like the regular Transformers toys. An edited English
translation of that tech-spec is included in this book.
Takara Re-Releases
With renewed interested in the 'old-school' Transformers driving the market,
Takara decided to re-release several of the original Transformers figures.
Some of these figures were repainted and made into either new characters
(Road Rage, Crosscut), or into new takes on existing characters (Dark
Rodimus, Shining Magnus). The tech-specs or these 'reissue' releases have
been included in this archive as well.
BotCon 2002
At the annual Transformers convention known as BotCon, 3H Productions
introduced two new characters based on repaints of the Cliffjumper and
Bumblebee molds. Though technically well beyond release date of classic
Transformers material, the new characters of 'Tap-Out' and 'Glyph' were
obviously meant to fit in with the rest of 'Generation One'. Their
tech-specs have been included here as well.
The Heroic Autobots
Lead by the heroic Optimus Prime, the Autobots fight for freedom on their
home planet of Cybertron. Desperate for energy, they head to prehistoric
Earth in search of fuel. On their way, they are ambushed by the Decepticons
and crash into Mt. Saint Helena. Four million years later, they are revived
and rebuilt along with their enemies. Now the Autobots have a new planet to
defend from the Decepticons - the Earth!

Small, eager, and brave, Bumblebee acts as a messenger and spy. Due to his
small size, he dares to go where others can't and won't. He idolizes the
bigger Autobots, especially Optimus Prime and Prowl, and strives to be
accepted. He is the most energy efficient and has the best vision of all the
Autobots. He can go underwater for reconnaissance and salvage missions.
Although physically the weakest Autobot, his stealth more than compensates
for this inadequacy.

facility through an interplanetary talent exchange program. Cooperating with
human partners, every day he devotes his efforts to the safety of his
region. Unsophisticated and kindhearted, he cracks down on vicious crimes
with a firm manner. Now and then he'll conflict with the locals or his
co-workers owing to differences in culture or moral concepts. Carries

Transforming to a sleek black Lamborghini Countach, Deep Cover is a special
investigator attached to Iacon's police force. Dispatched to Earth with his
twin brother Clampdown, with whom he shares a common design. He performs
solo infiltration and investigation missions, makes great use of his image
projection, parabolic reflection and reduction functions, the last of
which can go down as far as 1/40. Carries gyrojet rifle and smart missiles.
Deepcover carries many secrets within him, a fact that sometimes shows in
his oft-tired expression.

the Autobot warriors of Cybertron. Inspires confidence, her warriors truly
feel that Prime was not the only one who could lead them. During the eons
since her many teammates departed into space and went missing four million
years ago, she and her female Autobot comrades who remained on Cybertron
have continued to protect their world from the overwhelming armed might of
the Decepticons. News of their continued existence is unexpected even to
Prime, which could be considered proof of her exceptional talent as a
leader. Elita One has a secret power: the ability to freeze time. Activating

has spent several hundred years stranded on a world that has become, for

structures. Exceptionally bright and intellectual, Glyph maintains a nearly

Millions of years ago, Hauler was a member of the construction team for the
Cybertronian metropolis of Crystal City. After losing his teammates in an

of securing energy resources, for which he now travels throughout the world.
Equipped with a variety of exploratory devices and a crane arm capable of

Huffer is cynical, hard-boiled, and pessimistic. "He looks through the world

strong. Superior mathematical and geometrical abilities. Often unhappy and
homesick for Cybertron.

in combat. If anything, distinguishing himself on the battlefield in his
current form would confirm his charisma could appeal to those around him.

Transformers: Scramble City
Introduction
Transformers' war shifted. It wasn't just enough to have transforming
robots, now they needed to combine as well. The Aerialbots, Stunticons,
Protectobots, and Combaticons were special teams of robots that not only
transformed into vehicles, but each team could combine to form a larger,
more powerful robot. If that wasn't enough, each side now had a huge city to
back their forces. The battle of the Transformers escalated with a second
year of toys and characters.
Operation Scramble
It is the year 1985, and the Autobots and Decepticons have conquered the toy
market. The Transformers had already become one of the most popular and
successful toy-lines of all time.
The second full year of the line would be even more successful, but Hasbro
had a problem on its hands. Their intended 'second line' wasn't ready yet -
slipping behind in production. The first 'Hasbro original' molds weren't
going to see light for a bit, and fans wanted more toys.
This really wasn't much of a problem, though. Takara had a number of toys
ready from the end of its Diaclone run. These 'Scramble City' toys featured
themed 'teams' that could link up with larger figures to form giants. The
race-car, jet, military, and rescue teams were tapped for repainting and
retooling, along with their 'Scramble City'.
Even as the now-classic characters were lining up the shelves, the new teams
of Autobot jets and Decepticon military vehicles were eagerly anticipated.
When the Aerialbots, Stunticons, Combaticons, and Protectobots surfaced,
they were huge hits.
Scramble City
One source of confusion about the term 'Scramble City' is just what is being
scrambled. In the United States, the toys were sold as teams only. There
wasn't any mention of being able to 'swap arms and legs' for different
configurations for the giant warriors. There was no mention at all of the
ability of the Scramble City characters to link to their base- cities
either.
These features did feature in Japan, however. A new episode of Transformers,
called 'Scramble City', was crafted to not only introduce more new
characters, but also show off the 'Scramble Power' of the new special teams.
The episode was, honestly, a glorified ad. But it did attach the 'Scramble
City' name to the 1985-1986 line of toys - as well as create a more solid
tie from the first two seasons of the Transformers cartoon to the upcoming
Transformers: The Movie.
Oddities
Unlike the somewhat chaotic first year of Transformers, the Scramble City
line was remarkably cleaned up. There were fewer production errors and more
care taken with their advertising efforts.
Bruticus
Of all the 'Scramble City' characters, only one had an oddity with their
tech-specs. The sales of the 'combiner gift sets' weren't doing all that
well. It was easier for a parent to spend five dollars at a time on an
Aerialbot or Stunticon, than to plop down thirty at once for the set.
Superion and Menasor did all right at Christmas, but weren't moving quickly
as sets afterwards. Only a handful of the Defensor gift sets were released,
and none of the planned Bruticus gift sets made it to store shelves.
The Bruticus gift set was dropped - in America. It was released in Japan,
however, and given tech-specs. The tech-specs given here are based on their

It is the year 2005, and the treacherous Decepticons have succeeded in
conquering the Autobots' home planet of Cybertron. But, from secret staging
grounds on two of Cybertron's moons, the Autobots plan to retake their
homeland.
Transformers: The Movie
When the Transformers series was a bona-fide hit in 1984, Hasbro and Marvel
had decided to craft a movie to further sell the franchise. Movie tie-ins
were all the rage at that point, and everything from Masters of the Universe
to Smurfs were appearing on the big screen. Of course, the fact that all
these movies bombed horribly didn't seem to deter anyone.
The movie aired in 1985 to bad reviews, parental complaints, and
largely-empty theatres. The movie was decidedly violent, graphically so at
points, and has some gratuitous 'bad language' thrown in as 'shock' value.
Despite the marketing blitz, the movie only lasted three weeks in theatres.
Of course, the truly damaging part of the Movie came with the death of many
fan-loved characters. Prowl, Ironhide, and several others were casually
killed-off early in the movie, and even the most innocent of the audience
realized that it was to 'make way' for the new cast of characters. The worst
part of this was the death of Optimus Prime - only to have the legendary
character, the cornerstone of the franchise, be replaced at the end of the
movie.
For most toy-lines, that would have been the instant death-knell for the
franchise. Transformers, however, proved to endure beyond the movie's
shortcomings, and played up on its strengths.
Transformers: 2010
With the Movie's release, the series itself had to change to reflect the
events within the movie. There were new characters, and new toys to sell.
There was a new storyline, of course, and all that had to be reflected
within the series' third season.
With a rushed schedule and somewhat confused mandate, Transformers had a
hit-or-miss third season. The very best and very worst of the series was
thrown out. Some episodes had incredible animation, others were incredibly
bad. Sometimes the series was geared for an audience in their teens, other
times it was geared for very young kids. It was an erratic and confused
season. Ratings for the show plummeted, and it was very obvious that Marvel
was going to pull the plug.
The End of the Run
The 'Matrix Forever' line would be the last line most Americans would be
familiar with. The show, domestically, would only have three mediocre
episodes dedicated to the next line. More than that, after the movie, the
popularity of the franchise itself was in sharp decline.
Though 'Transformers' would continue for several more years in the United
States, most people consider 'Matrix Forever' to be the end of the original
Generation of Transformers. In truth, it wouldn't be until Beast Wars that
Transformers would again enjoy the popularity that it once had.
Despite its somewhat infamous place in Transformers history, this age did
introduce many concept that have clung to this day. Some of the episodes
remain fan-favorites, as do many of the characters.
Arcee
Unlike the other characters featured in Transformers: The Movie, Arcee was
never given a proper toy during the 'Matrix Forever' run. She wouldn't
receive either a toy or tech-specs until years later in Japan with the
arrival of a 'garage model kit'. The tech-specs presented in this book are
based on those found on the garage kit.

With the death of Optimus Prime, the Autobots turn their hopes to their new
leader, the youthful and powerful Rodimus Prime, to defend Cybertron and the
Earth from the ruthless Decepticons. But even as the Autobots strive to push
back their old foes, a new, terrifying menace has come to destroy Cybertron.

he can travel faster than the speed of sound, leaving a blurred image in his

that can cut through solid rock. In robot mode, he carries a laser
blaster that shoots short bursts of intense heat. Scourge's only weakness is
