Do you spray paint the toys. If that's the case that sucks big time. who
wants a freaking toy with a rubber paint shell over it.
Obviously the toy must be very sticky. especially in the summer time. the
bottom of the toy must leave paint marks all over the display shelf.
Just touching the damn toy must leave finger prints.
How does one transform these toys without ripping paint off??
I spray painted a MW Starscream years ago & the toys looked horrible. some
parts of the plastic melted because of the spray paint.
A few years back I use to buy paint markers & do minor touch ups.
I managed to paint marker a few silver & clear Takara PVC's. the down side to
these freaking paint markers were. the light colors didn't stick. while the
dark colors went on nicely.
IMO,Over all painting TF toys sucks.

It's very simply. You take the toy apart, then paint one half of all
the pieces, resting the unpainted half on one end. It dried, then you
paint the other half, laying the dried half on this time.

I used spraypaint at one time--It works good most of the time, as long
as you don't use it on joints and make sure to move the pieces around
on the newspaper/cardboard/whatever.

Nope. Paint dries, you idiot. Apparently you don't know that.

Hmm, let's see. You scrape the parts that rub together during
transformation before you paint it. And you don't paint joints. If you
read up on this, you'd know.

Well, that's your fault for not checking the spray paint and not
dissasembling the toy.

Markers? God, are you a beginner. Everyone knows Testors Acrylics are
the best way to go.

In your world. I prefer to paint my TFs. Hell, I guess I'm a "true" TF
kitbasher. You look at a toy and say "How can I display this?" I look
at a toy and say "How can I make this better?"
When you can think of a way to make every toy in your collection
better, give me a call.

Was it really necessary to respond in such a trollish manner? The questions
seemed legitimate to me, and Deathy isn't the only person who wonders these
things.

Bah, repainting a toy does not a kitbasher make. It's when you can take 5
unrelated toys, and make a new one out of them that you can call yourself a
kitbasher.
Unless you take a large heavy object to them, and smash them to bits. That
would make a 'kitbasher' in a different manner.

That was done nearly 6-7 years ago.
All I spent was $10 because MW Stascream was beyond reduced in price.
I did take apart all the pieces first. then I spray painted the toy red &
silver. putting back together the toy was a real pain in the @$$. The over
all look of the toy afterwards was dull & not plastic shinny anymore.
Over all it's just not worth my time,money & effort. Especially considering
Hasbro/Takara paint every mold twice & beyond.

It's not like Deathy said that people who do repaints are idiots. The
impression I got was that he was just frustarted due to a bad painting
incident or 2, which I can sympathize with. I've tried painting toys and
stuff a number of different ways, and none of my methods worked well. It
amazes me how some people get such good jobs done on some of their figures,
because I'm too scared to try now. I wouldn't want to ruin my SuperPants
Prime just in order to make him look like a Scourge :s

of non-transforming lines. She's the landlord of one of my best friends, and
a really nice woman who has let me bury my dead cat in her backyard flower
garden.
She mostly does the faces of dolls, but has also done a bunch of action
figures. It's something she does when her artwork isn't selling. Some very
popular and classic rubber duckies are her work as well.
We've discussed toy design and painting, and she's even seen some of my
repaints. Oddly, I don't think we've ever discussed materials.
At the beginning of this post, it really seemed like there would be
something of value in it, didn't it? Nope.
I'm personally not fond of Testors Gloss acrylics, since they take too long
to dry. I keep meaning to try some professional grade acrylics, maybe
Winson&Newton since they make a fine product, but haven't gotten around to
it.
