If you find out, please, post the answer here. It has piqued my
curiosity, too.

Having never heard of such a thing, my initial guess on where this exactly
this device was mentioned would be "nowhere."

Something like that happened in a fanfic, and the article editor may
have mistaken the fanfic for something official -- or not understood
what constitutes "official" for the purposes of that article.
In the fanfic (whose title and author I do not recall, but it was
probably five years ago), some crisis prompts the Autobots to undergo
a process that increases their power, but reduces their size and
lifespan. Among the first volunteers, Optimus Prime becomes
Lioconvoy.

This may be a stretch, but IIRC I heard something about how the
Dinobots--in IDW's Shockwave spotlight--were Maximals. They had organic
altmodes and everything....Until Shockwave *burned off their skin.*
This could have something to do with it, maybe?
I don't see how.
The Dinobots apparently got organic skin in the issue, but that don't make
them Maximals. Having organic components doesn't have anything to do with
being a Maximal, as far as I can tell.
Clarification: While Maximals (and Predacons) do appear to have bodies that
are more easily and readily _adaptable_ to organic alt modes than their
ancestors, there is no reason to think organic alt modes are the norm
amongst them, quite the contrary.

Oh, I know that quite well. >.>
It really is wacky that all the Maximal toys have beast modes though.
Who knows, perhaps there are lots of female Transformers too, and the
males have simply been over-represented on the cartoons and toys?
