With great pleasure, 3H Enterprises proudly announces the launching of
its new sister site, http://www.botconbeyond.com. At BotCon: Beyond,
we hope to continually entertain the fan community with details
surrounding old and new storylines running through the convention
years. We firmly believe that an annual story is not enough, no matter
how large it gets. We believe that for fans to get maximum enjoyment
from the storyline, a continuous tale of adventure needs to be
presented throughout the convention year - leading up to a climactic
conclusion at the show.
That is precisely where BotCon: Beyond comes in. In its pages,
you will find character profiles, storyline synopses, and a whole lot
more tempting you to take the plunge and enjoy the surprises we have
in store, both on the site and at the show. Will we give hints to the
identity of exclusives? Will we tease you with previews of comic pages
before they are released? Will there be contests and giveaways? The
answer is a resounding yes to all of the above, but not in any way you
would expect…
So come along for the best ride this side of the galaxy as we
take you, the fan community and supporters of BotCon, to the stars and
beyond!
3H Enterprises
!!!
I don't know how you guys do it; BotCon just gets more and more amazing
with every passing year. Thank you, thank you, thank you. This is a
fantastic idea, and I can assure you I'll be visiting regularly. I can't
wait for the teases you mentioned about upcoming convention merchandise
and characters.
I'm sending in my pre-reg form ASAP. Remember, everybody, the sooner you
send in your form, the better an idea 3H will have of how many people are
coming and how much money they can spend. So get those forms in early!

As I type this I'm downloading the first Beast Wars comic. Cool. (Am I
sounding fanboyish? Ah, well.)

So does this mean a regular series online, or just reprinting the prior
stuff. (Not that I couldn't use the prior stuff, mind you.) Anyway, it looks
like they've done a good job. Then again, they do have two other sites (the
Tech Spec archive and the Botcon Online page) so they have some experience
methinks.

Well, this explains why they haven't been answering their e-mail. :)

Will we design information to confuse or mislead the fans? Will we actually
answer questions about the art contest this year? Only time will tell!
Zobovor... y'know, I hadn't looked at the Deployers' tech specs in a while, but
upon reading Mol's profile, I get the distinct impression that he's supposed to
be the reincarnation of Brawn. Was there discussion about this at one point?
I didn't pay much attention to the threads at the time, and I can't find them
on deja now...

Do I detect a hint of bitterness in this post? :)

Nooooo! Misleading and confusing us is one of the best things 3H can do.
It makes the mystique of BotCon even more exciting than before, because
we're constantly left guessing as to what will happen. One of my absolute
favorite parts of BC2K was when they revealed Apelinq at the dinner and
half the room or more -- who were convinced the second toy would be
Cataclysm -- gasped. That *ruled*! Keeping us totally in the dark, as
they've done in the past, is good. Confusing the heck out of us is even
better!

Oh, I agree with that, Steve-o. I was referring to the second question of
Zob's, actually, because I seem to recall him being anxious for them to
answer e-mail questions of his regarding the art context but not getting
any. Answers, that is. :)

A little bit, yes. Let's just say I'm... disappointed.

Before you buy.
Not exactly. Spqqky did indeed have both toys up for auction before the
toys were announced at BotCon, but the latter of the two auctions (the
one for Apelinq, IIRC) was started so late that I doubt that any of the
BotCon attendees had time to learn about it before they left for the
convention.
So for the people who went to BotCon, at least one of the two toys was
still a surprise. :-)

Yeah, I love being strung along and then, out of nowhere, having a surprise
thrown in my face. Anybody remember BotCon '95 when Hasbro had promised they'd
show up, but suddenly and unexpectedly cancelled that Sunday morning? Wasn't
that a hoot? Or how about when Bob Skir said in no uncertain terms that
characters like Rhinox and Waspinator would not be appearing in Beast Machines?
Ho, ho! What a clever ruse!
In all seriousness... there's nothing wrong with there being a bunch of
surprises at BotCon. It would be reduced to little more than an overglorified
toy show, if that were the case. And sure, I'd even fork over fifty or sixty
bucks for one of the convention exclusives without having the faintest notion
which toy-that-I-already-owned it was a repaint of. However, when they go out
of their way to make everybody think that one of the toys was Cataclysm, that
just seems like an unnecessary bit of misdirection to me.
I almost didn't bother with the Fox Kids Transmetal Cheetor repaint because of
Cataclysm. (I'm glad I picked him up, especially since it was the only time I
saw him at retail.) I did not, however, bother to ask anyone who did attend
BotCon to pick up a set of the toys for me, since--while I wanted to pick the
toys up eventually--it wasn't important enough for me to own a repaint of
either Rampage or Cheetor *immediately.* Maybe I would have changed my mind if
I'd known it was a repaint of one of my favorite BW toys. As it stands, I
ended up trading off a couple of my G1 toys almost immediately after the
convention, because I anticipated the demand for Apelinq to be very high. I
don't regret that, but I don't think 3H considered the minor panic they might
have created for the non-attendees.
It's roughly the equivalent of Hasbro pulling a fast one and not coming out
with Primal Prime at all, but rather releasing--oh, I don't know--Botanica or
the BFH in highly limited quantities at Kay Bee. Watch as collectors and
scalpers alike scramble amid the confusion, and a lot of people end up missing
out just because they decided they didn't need another Optimal Optimus toy. It
just smacks of unprofessionalism in my opinion.

...or maybe they won't be, and I'm just being sneaky.
IIRC, they didn't "go out of their way"... they printed one tiny little
picture the year before, and said nothing else from that point on. All
the rest was rabid fan speculation.
>don't regret that, but I don't think 3H considered the minor panic they might

That's the point, though -- the convention exclusives are, as the name
implies, aimed first and foremost (perhaps exclusively) at convention
attendees. Fair? Of course not. That's not the purpose of having BC
exclusives. The point is that those going to Botcon can get something
unique and rare if they like.
I'm sort of indifferent to whether or not the exclusives are revealed
beforehand, myself. I've only bought 2 of the last 6 Botcon exclusives,
and wasn't overjoyed by either. OTOH, 2 of the ones I *didn't* get
(Windrazor and Antagony) WERE very impressive, and I kinda wish I'd gotten
them instead. Maybe I would have, if I'd known what was what when I was
registering. Or maybe I'd just say "Eh, it's a repaint of a toy I've
already got" and pass completely. Who knows.
