I just saw this mentioned in another forum, someone has started using AI upscaling (same as has been used for remastering "pre-rendered" backgrounds from PSX games) on the Beast Wars series (already up to the end of season 2!), and it looks shockingly good to my eyes at least:

I'll be certain to schedule a rewatch in the future now, it looks a lot better than my dvd's do now...

Wow. Every episode looks like Beast Wars: the Movie or something. Phenomenal.

Zob (wants somebody to use AI to up the frame rate for G1)

And, see, here's where I worry my eyes might either be getting older, or simply playing tricks. I watched "The Trigger, Part 2" just now, and, to my eyes, these eps look identical to broadcast quality back in 1997. But, I have not had access to my old DVDs in easily a decade.

Is the fact that these renders look the same as always more a symptom of how my eyes and brain have simply gotten used to remaster-level quality in terms of CGI, and animation in general, so it simply looks "normal" now?

(A similar case could be made, I think, for the remastered classic Star Trek episodes back in the 2000s).

I'm not seeing the difference either, although that could just as well be due to watching it on my phone. Regardless, the DVDs were fairly high quality to begin with, with less noticeable room for i improvement compared to G1.

As an aside, try watching the Season 5 TFTM episodes on TFRaw, then toggle over to the new 4K HD remaster of the movie. We've come a long way!
