Right, so it's been a while since this was a declared a taboo topic
for ATT. I'll bet if I were to look around a bit, I'll still be able
to find that FAQ somebody made up about Transformers and ATT, which
included the topics which are "off-limits" for the newsgroups (because
of how much people argued about it, or couldn't be resolved) like
FIRRIB/FIBRIR, and if a Death Star with a Darth Vader Headmaster could
beat Unicron with a Hitler Powermaster and so on.

Anyway, now we have toys! For the Death Star and Unicron! And we even
have Primus!

So, in all honesty, which toy out of the three is best? And why?

We got Unicron first, for the Armada series, and we all loved him. I'm
a bit leery of the colours (especially when he got recoloured for
Energon), but he was cool, he had a lot of features we recognized from
the feature cartoon, and it was totally wicked.

Primus, I think came next, during Cybertron / Galaxy Force. Primus is
my personal favourite, because they've tried to recreate a whole bunch
of features in the planet mode from the establishing shots from the
original show. And c'mon, who really expected a Primus toy? Now we can
totally have somebody for Unicron to beat up.

Darth Vader-Star is very cool looking, and while Primus is an
extensive re-tooling of Unicron, Darth Vader-Star is a completely new
figure. And he's got a light-sabre! However, his planet mould is
pretty bland, not as cool as either of the others.

Primus isn't a remold of Unicron at all. Not even that many design
similarities.

He's my favorite of the bunch, since both Unicron and Darth Vader are
pretty much shell formers. Vader much more so, but Unicron ends up
with shell parts dangling off his back. Primus just has kibble...

I don't really like the idea of a transforming Cybertron/Primus,
though. And the use of the Cyber Keys and the Cyber Key Holder weaken
the toy for me. I mostly just don't think of his character, and simply
enjoy him for what he is -- a spikey ball. He also doesn't seem very
massive to me, he seems more like one of the early Russian satellites
-- a small ball with antennae. I would expect that at full size, he
would be 4 feet in diameter or so, rather than the size of a planet.

A couple of years ago, Grebo asked after possible fan
characterizations for the Darth Vader Death Star toy. I recall really
liking the characterization that I came up with. It made me like the
toy a lot more than I would have otherwise.

Ah, found it! http://groups.google.com/group/alt.toys.transformers/msg/3d81f111a9222620

This does not, however, change the fact that transforming him back
into ball mode is just a frustrating nuisance, pushing and aligning
lots of panels.

I love DarthStar. He's a bigass Darth Vader Death Star robot. Those
are all adjectives and nouns that I enjoy.

I have never succeeded in transforming him.

my 2 cents:

Unicron in robot mode was made in master piece style. the toy is
easily the most super poseable & adult themed detailed of the three.
However the planet mode sucks & is the worst looking of the three.

Primus kinda looks a bit like that bw neo unicron proto type. primus
has the 2nd best robot mode. primus has the best planet mode.

that death star darth vader looks so cool in both modes. the robot
mode isn't as super poseable as unicron & primus. planet/moon mode
looks the 2nd best of the three.

I've actually got all 3 planet formers on one top shelf. they look
really cool. from left to right are primus, darth vader & unicron.

Unicron is the only one I own and the best, imo. Primus is okay but I
feel he should look more like the original comic character (the Cyb/GF
version is too radically different for my tastes). Darth Vader was okay
but not canon and uncertainly unnecessary.

t.k.

Er... but not canon and not necessary, I mean. :)

He looked pretty similar to me. I figured he was a rather extensive re-
tool.

D'you have all three of 'em? How do they compare in terms of size?

Make mine Primus !

I took a long while to get this toy and afterward I had to wonder why
didn't I get him sooner .
(ok so I know the answer to that , his planet feet / toes are a bit
ridiculous)

But I so love his planet mode . It's not perfect with them oh-so-
obvoius minicon ports on top of the towers , but it's such a nice
Cybertron anyway .
I've seen some crazy-pretty customs of him , all metallic and stuff
and for a while I did wonder if Hasbro was gonna offer a "Golden Age"
repaint of him , but that isn't happening right now .
Besidse , I wonder how they could do that and not make him look too
much like orange Unicron .
Yellow maybe ? I dunno

Unicron is the biggest of the 3,second tallest is Primus, darth vader
death star is the 3rd smallest.

I'm going to quickly get a measuring tape & measure them in height
inches for you.

Unicron is exactly 13 3/4 from toe to head. from toe to head+head
horns is 14 1/2 from toe to head horns+ side shoulder horns unicron is
15 inches tall in robot mode
primus is exactly 12 inches
death star vader is exactly 9 3/4 almost 10 inches

He's not overly fragile and pointlessly complex. His alt-mode isn't
near perfect. He really isn't like a master piece toy at all.

He has the same articulation as Primus, and he is a toy aimed at 8-12
year olds. He's not "adult themed". He's bright orange. We're lucky he
doesn't talk in rhyme.

If there was ever a Transformers/DC crossover, I would like to see a
story with Wheelie and Etrigan rhyming at each other.
