As I've already stated, I dislike Figueroa's new art style. As for the
story, I found having the Autobots staying behind on Earth stupid and
illogical (why not monitor from orbit?) I also predicted that would
happen when I finished AHM #12--glad to see they didn't try to prove me
wrong by doing something original. I also don't know why Optimus Prime
always has to be so angsty all the time. Good lord, man, get over it and
man up! He's supposed to be this great leader and all he ever does is
have recriminations over this and that! I also wondered about the little
balloons that explained who each character was--sure, it's a new style
but they are still mostly recognizable. On the plus side, I did like the
pace of the story. It didn't have that feeling they decompressed an
issue's worth of story over three issues that AHM did. I felt like I
read an actual issue's worth of story. I also hold out hope that maybe
Costa might go somewhere new and interesting with things and not do what
we all expect to see next. I guess we'll see...
t.k.
I guess he's got low self-esteem or is his own worst critic. Optimus
always seemed to be far more "angsty" in the G1 Marvel Comics series
than he ever was on the G1 TV series. Needless to say, I vastly
preferred his TV show personality. Nobody wants to follow a leader
who constantly second-guesses himself.

What I didn't like, ok I get it, Optimus is angsty. Optimus has been
angsty since Marvel, it's a good characteristic, but being angsty
doesnt have to get in the way of the fact that he's a supposed
legendary hero. I want to see some more no nonsense and ass kicking.
Seems like too many recent comics want to just paint him only as a
tortured sole. Really how many times latley has Optimus lost a fight
in comics? Come on, let Optimus put his issues aside and punch the
fuck outta Megatron or Skywarp.
In other words, I am happy with my 3.99 well spent. It could have been
better, but I'm happy with it.

This is why AHM ruled! It did the Prime thing, took him out for a
while, and then he came back and it was awesome.
Maybe I'll check out a TPB, however didn't Spike finish off Megatron?
Why can't Prime do that? It makes for fiction, but still...
my 2 cents:
I'm in the minority that actually enjoyed the new art. Optimus looked
like a mixture of his war within form+1984 form+new movie style.
Hotrod looked his alternator form with a bit of the movie style thrown
in.
I enjoyed the 2 page flash back fight scene spread. trying to figure
out the G-1 characters thru that collage was interesting. I'm
surprissed no one here tried to name all the characters in that 2 page
fight scene.
not seeing the decepticons in this issue was a major let down for me.
breakdown just wasn't enough decepticon to satisfy my hunger. seeing
the lower half of breakdown drawn in the classics 2.0 sideswipe/
sunstreaker lower legs was kinda pathetic. especially considering the
upper half looked nothing like 2.0 sunstreaker/sideswipe.
I like the idea of taking both faction leaders out of this comic for a
while. prime & megatron have been too dominant & others deserve the
spot light. My guess is Galvatron leads the decepticons. while hotrod
takes the matrix away from the decepticons & becomes rodimus prime.
issue #3 has rodimus prime on the front cover & i'm overly excited to
read that up comming issue.
I liked how prime narrated almost the entire issue. I didn't enjoy
seeing those name tags by each character in issue #1. hopefully this
isn't a trend whenever a new character is introduced into this on
going series. IMO,Those tags would have been most helpful in that 2
page flash back fight scene.
I also don't like to see the humans too powerful & getting to much
story or persona. that's the #1 reason I hate the micheal bay
transformers movie verse. I prefer my TF stories comming from a
transformers point of view. I like seeing weak & defensless humans
with little to no persona/story arcs.
I won't be buying the bumblebee mini series. as I hate that
character.
I'm looking forward to buying the wreckers comic in january. because I
want to see what happens to fortmax, grimlock, ultra magnus & so forth.
all those loose lines that happened a while back,I want to see some
sort of ending.

Wreckers is not the book for you, because by the looks of things, it
will have none of those characters.
Instead, it's going to have Pyro and Overlord. Hell yeah.

WHAT THEY GOT RIGHT: Despite what I'm about to complain about, the story
itself is well crafted. This is Costa's first trip into the TFU, having been
chosen due to his work in the G.I. Joe comics for IDW. He makes the
situation believable. I also enjoy much of Figueroa's art (as usual), and
his mechanical designs are up to his usual talent.
WHAT THEY GOT WRONG: On the other hand, I don't understand why he's bringing
in the movie style faces. It really doesn't work on Hot Rod, and many of the
other mechs don't fair much better. However, my biggest gripe is a situation
I'm pretty much tired of. While I don't expect the humans as a whole to
start trusting all robots, even the Autobots, shouldn't the military realize
that there are two factions? At the end of All Hail Megatron (before we got
into the nightmare "Coda" issues), Sparkplug was sitting and talking to Kup,
and Spike wasn't exactly using the "Shockwave gun" on the Autobots. He was
warning them that the Autobots were going to have a tough time making
friends. You know what I liked about Animated and one of the few things they
DID get right in the second movie? Autobots and humans united against a
common foe-the Decepticons. We never seem to get that in the comics, and I've
pretty much had it with the Autobots being hunted like their Decepticons
while the 'Cons get away because they actually fight back or are able to get
away in the confusion. This trend in the comics version has to stop!
RECOMMENDATION: It's OK thus far, but I'll have to check further issues to
see where Costa goes with this storyline. I also wish Don would get back to
the normal Transformer faces, or at least tell us who to blame for it.
> I also wish Don would get back to
> the normal Transformer faces, or at least tell us who to blame for it.
By all indications, it's Don who's responsible for it--and from what
I've seen, there's no kind of mandate that These Are What Transformers
Look Like. Costa even said in an interview, "The art in the ongoing is
like the weather in New Orleans--if you don't like it, just wait five
minutes..." which says to me that once Don is off the book, the TFs
are all magically going to revert to looking like themselves again.
Not to mention, Wreckers and Bumblebee are running alongside the
ongoing, and the TFs look regular there.
