I hope many people understand my points. I guess some hatemail is in the
midst though.

If Rhino feels that they need to restore the audio, THEN GET RID
OF THE "MOCK" 2.0 STEREO CHANNEL. It takes up space on the discs, and it
almost never does a thing. How did they not fix this problem after
even admitting themselves that they screwed up on the 1st season box set??
The worst problem this creates is it adds sort of a mask over the original
audio. The sound (audio and quality) is actually lowered, by adding sound
on top of existing sound. This is due to the way it must be done. The
audio quality of my old FHE video tapes is way better than the DVDs. The
bass is deep and rich. It could also be due to the 20 some years that have
gone by so the masters lost quality.

I am very appreciative for what Rhino has done so far, but they have wasted
a lot of money on a restoration process that almost no one cares about.
Honestly, how many people walk into a store and say, "Wow! Transformers!
Oh, it's in 5.1 Dolby Digital, well I'll buy it then." I would be more
enticed to purchase it if it said on the box, "Original Mono Soundtrack."
That is even what the Japanese Box Sets say.

I do love the commercial bumpers, and since I haven't checked every
episode yet, does anyone know if there are episodes without the new sounds?
I want to make AVIs of the bumpers, but not with the "POW" lasers.

One last thing, why is GI Joe The Movie and Transformers The Movie untouched
by Rhino? I was again disappointed when I bought the GI Joe Miniseries two
disc set.

So does anyone know about how much $ to get the distribution rights from
Hasbro??? =)

I was under the impression that even mono sources have to be encoded as
2.0, so the same sound comes out of both the left and right speakers and
not just one of them. This seems to be the case with my R2 Japanese
Transformers disks. Did Rhino add some kind of directionality to the 2.0
tracks (the ones that didn't have any added SFX) on the Season 2 Part 1
box?

>One last thing, why is GI Joe The Movie and Transformers The Movie untouched

If by "untouched" you mean "they didn't deface them somehow," you'd be
wrong. I don't have the GI Joe movie disk, but The Movie disk isn't very
good at all compared to a lot of anime DVDs of animated movies from the
same time period.

For one thing, they upped the color saturation, making some scenes (like
one shot of Unicron during the devouring of Lithlone, see a screenshot at
www.pitt.edu/~jsdst5/tftmr1.jpg, and compare it to the Japanese R2 release
at www.pitt.edu/~jsdst5/tftmr2.jpg . These files won't be here for more
than a couple months so if someone wants to use them in a web page
comparison or something please grab them now) nothing but a solid muddy
red blur. Or maybe they just didn't do a good job when remastering. At
any rate you can see the difference. The bitrate is also pretty bad,
causing some pretty heavy pixelation in shots with lots of detail and
movement. As for their "5.1" surround, all they did was take the mono
track and pipe it through all the channels. It sounds terrible.

One good thing about Rhino's The Movie disk is that they seem to have done
a progressive encode (so that the frames are encoded more like film frames
instead of NTSC video frames and will look much better when played back on
a computer or on a progressive-capable DVD player hooked up to a digital
TV). I would be most disappointed if they didn't considering they
remastered it from a film source in the first place.

Another gripe is that Rhino didn't include the original theatrical trailer
(you would think just about every movie DVD would have them nowadays),
even though the Japanese release and the UK release (even though it was
cropped on the latter) have it, and I'm guessing the Australian release
has it too.

What did Rhino f*ck up on that?

I think his problems with the G1 series DVDs lie mostly in the sound.
While you're right about your complaint with the mock 5.1 sound, they
didn't add extra stuff to it like they have with their series box sets.
That being the case, I think he does raise a good question. If the way
they did the mock 5.1 tracks on the TF and GIJoe movie DVDs was good
enough for those, then why couldn't they have just done the same with the
series box sets?

What's up? Did Rhino add the same *crappy* "new" sounds to the GI JOE
miniseries DVD, like they did with the TF G1 sets? Is there no option
on the DVD for the original mono soundtrack?

If so, even though I've been waiting months for the "deluxe" DVD set
(with extras and the Snake Eyes action figure), I WILL NOT but it
tomorrow.

I'm just glad they released the epsides, but putting "Original Mono
Soundtrack" would have given them a certain charm.

Both sound choices have the annoying, new, useless, and original
soundtrack degrading noises. In fact, one of the audio choices has
soft, tinny sound and the new added sound effects occur way before
they're supposed to, e.g. Spirit's screech during the opening credits
of episodes for Revenge Of Cobra.

The only - ONLY - time I thought Rhino made the right choice with
these extra sounds is during the opening sequence of "Starscream's
Brigade" when they use the ammunition firing sound effect. It works
well because it's actual Earth military equipment so the sound fits
in.

Otherwise, it's all canned and you know it's not part of the original
show. Even not watching these shows for so long, some of them stand
out so bad. But Rhino sure loves their "Cartoon Sounds" setting on a
keyboard they must have in a sound room somewhere. Just listen to
that opening sequence (before Op or Soundwave show up in the S2
menus). They go through craploads of sounds, never using the same one
twice, and all of them being "cartoon noises". Even when it doesn't
fit! Since when does a rolling catapult make the same sound as Fred
Flintstone's feet when he's running?!

Someone ::looks pointedly at Rhino:: needs to replace their sound
editor. I'm not saying I'm advocating a layoff or firing to any poor
soul in this economy...but if I *had* to choose someone...that's all
I'm saying.

Small correction, it's probably Freedom's screech you're talking
about. Freedom was the bird, Spirit was the person.

And here was me, thinking Rhino *really* screwed up!

have taken over Snake Eyes irrational rivalry of you from the

much harder to portray as a character! Caw! Caw!"

You are all probably going to smack me, but I don't mind thoes new sound
effects.
I just ignore them and live with contentment that I can finally get these
old episodes without having to get someones crappy 50th generation copy of
the original TV broadcasts of the episodes that are grossly deteriated
and/or having to sit through another Generation 2 episode with that annoying
Cyber-Net Space Cube.

Looking at the Rhino releases and the G-2 episodes, I think we got the
lesser of two evils on that one.

But hey, this is just me.

You're right, because, when I first scanned this post, I couldn't
make any sense out of it. I was reading "Friedman" in place of
Freedom. :) "I never said anything about a Ron Friedman speech!"
So, I did transpose the names.
