Another one of my eBay goodies arrived today! I've been looking forward to
this all week. I swear, it's just like Christmas, only I don't have to vacuum
up pine needles. (And perish the thought that I'm only buying toys for myself,
here. The kids are getting their very own TechnoDrome, a veritable holy grail
to them at the moment, and my wife is getting... something that I'd better not
mention yet since I know she lurks here on occasion. It's a surprise, you
see.)

I got my first Command Center back in Christmas of 1985, but it was among the
toys I didn't bother to take with me when I moved in with my wife-to-be, seven
years ago. (I've sometimes regretted leaving it behind, along with my
electronic Omnibot and Verbot. My dad presumably still has all this stuff
laying around somewhere, but can you imagine what it would cost to ship it all
to me?) Besides, I've only gotten back into GoBots again within the last
couple of years, so when I saw an auction with a Buy It Now price that neatly
matched the original retail price of this toy, I simply couldn't resist. I
even got the original box, instructions, and label sheet along with it. Yay!

Unlike Hasbro, it seems Tonka was far more willing to produce accessories and
vehicles as part of their robot toy line that didn't actually transform. While
Hasbro seemed reluctant to offer products in the Transformers toy line that
didn't transform (the generally accepted reason there was never a Quintesson
toy, for example), Tonka had no such compunctions (the GoBot Boomers just
*barely* had robot modes, and Zod had no transformation whatsoevr). They also
took advantage of the uniform scale of the regular GoBots toys, something
Hasbro really couldn't do, creating exo-suits for them to wear that enabled
almost any of them to become part of a gestalt (the Power Suits) as well as
playsets for them to inhabit (the Guardians got the Command Center; the
Renegades got Thruster a year or two later). Hasbro never utilized the
Transformers in an action figure format until the end of G1, and even then they
had to take away their transforming powers to do it.

The GoBot Command Center was clearly based on the AT-AT walkers from the Star
Wars toy line. In this case, the legs are shorter and the cockpit more
streamlined, but the inspiration for this design remains abundantly clear,
right down to the color scheme. Comparably sized and proportioned, it measures
about 20" long in vehicle form. The Command Center has two vehicular
configurations, actually. With the legs extended, it becomes a "space-age land
walker" measuring about a foot high. The legs are easier to manipulate than
the AT-AT's, since in this case they lack functional knee and ankle joints.
The vehicle head isn't articulated, either.

The Command Center also converts to a mobile vehicle by folding the legs down,
enabling the base to roll along on eight plastic wheels. (As I recall, the
Command Center was treated more like a space ship in the Challenge of the
GoBots cartoon, and this was the configuration that it used to fly.) It
doesn't do much in this form, though it does have a ramp that extends from the
back to allow access to Friendly Gobots (there is a method by which it
potentially restricts access to Enemy GoBots, as I'll explain in a moment).

Unlike the AT-AT, however, the Command Center actually unfolds into a
full-fledged playset. The vehicle stands up on its end, and either side of the
body opens up, not unlike Trypticon. Standing at nearly two feet high and
measuring 14" across at the widest point, the Command Center is equipped with
three areas on either side of various functions (the heights of the platforms
are staggered with respect to one another so that they won't interfere with one
another when the sides of the playset are closed). An elevator platform
running along the center of the base can be manually manipulated (using a
handle on the back of the fortress) to take GoBots to any of these levels.

There's also a circular room (the Strategy Chamber) in the center, attached to
the vehicle's cockpit at the top of the base. Rotating the cockpit will
simultaneously close off the room and reveal the gigantic and rather disturbing
robotic head at the top of the base, with perfectly square eyes and a
perfectlyu rectangular mouth. Apparently, either the GoBot Command Center
itself is a living entity, or it was designed that way in an attempt to scare
off potential invaders. The toy is also electronic (running on a 9V battery
that goes inside the cockpit); when you press the button on its forehead, its
translucent red eyes flash in tandem to a low-pitched warning alarm that sounds
like the error tone in a Simon game. (Sophisticated electronics? Hardly. Hey,
the toy was released 20 years ago.)

The design of the base encourages fantasy play, and requires a certain degree
of imagination since it doesn't actually *do* much else. The placment of the
stickers is also extremely important, since they are primarily responsible for
bringing the individual chambers to life. Without the stickers, there's almost
nothing to distinguish one room from the other, since some of the rooms are
otherwise completely featureless. (I'm very amazed by the physical quality of
the stickers, though. I was actually able to peel some of them off and
re-apply them without damaging them at all, something I *never* expected to be
able to do with a toy this old.)

In the fuel room, there are two detachable rubber hoses connected to the upper
wall--one shaped like a gasoline pump and the other probably meant to resemble
a defibrillator. According to signage on the wall, the liquid fuel dispenses
"one xylum per liter" while the electrical energy administers "two xylums per
volt." Apparently xylums are GoBotronic units of energy (not to be confused
with xylem, the plant tissue). On the opposite side is the Trauma Center,
presumably where Guardians go as they await Rest-Q's administrations. (The
sticker on my toy was misapplied, so instead of resting in a repair bay, it
looks like the subject in this room is suspended from the ceiling. That's
quite an incentive to recover quickly, I'd imagine.)

The next floor up is perhaps the most interesting room: the Interrogation
Center. It's certainly the most interactive, at any rate. It features a "most
wanted" style poster of some of the most notorious Renegades (Cy-Kill, Fitor,
Loco, and Cop-Tur), and includes a flip-up Enemy Detector made of red
translucent plastic, that functions in much the same way as Hasbro's tech specs
decoders. (Curiously, the toy pictured on the box doesn't have a flip-up
panel; it's permanently attached. They must have changed it so it wouldn't
break or something.) There's some Guardian propaganda imprinted within the
panels on the walls; the lettering normally reads "Save the Earth," but when
you peer through the decoder panel, the hidden message "Stop Zod" is revealed.
Subliminal messages and trickery abounds.

LOCO: Where am I?
LEADER-1: In the Command Center.
LOCO: Who are you?
LEADER-1: The old Leader-1.
LOCO: Who's the new Leader-1?
LEADER-1: You are MR-06.

The Command Center sticker sheet includes a whole batch of triangular stickers
designed with either a letter "F" or letter "E" on them (standing, naturally,
for either Friendly or Enemy). You're not really supposed to know that until
you stick them behind the decoder screen, though. (One wonders how the
Guardians convinced the Renegades to all go around wearing "E" stickers. Maybe
the Guardians imprint the brand on any Renegades they capture?) The rear hatch
I mentioned earlier also has a red translucent window, so presumably whoever's
manning the door that day will refuse access to anyone wearing the wrong
sticker.

The next floor up is the Cafeteria. There's really nothing to do here; the
whole room is one big sticker. It's still funny, though. The lunch lady
behind the counter looks like a relative of Turbo's, and among the menu items
offered are Tune-Up Casserole, Shocklate Shakes, and Nose Cones. (I'm getting
disturbing visions of Iacon's fanfic "Null" from that last one.) I freely
admit that the camp value of the menu items was one of the main reasons I
wanted to own this toy once again.

The fourth floor is the GoBot De-Materializer room, which includes a plastic
fence. None of the other levels have fences (including the next higher-up
room), so there must be some reason why GoBots are prone to falling off this
level in particular. Now, I'm honestly not sure whether this is simply the
GoBot version of a transporter room (meaning they must Re-Materialize somewhere
else), or whether it's a disintegration chamber designed for executions. There
*are* little circular panels on the flooring that look like Star Trek
transporter panels. However, the little icon next to the room's name of a
robot behind bars, I'd say the latter function is probably more likely. That,
combined with the fact that the GoBot presently in the midst of
De-Materialization on the sticker graphic looks an awful lot like Tank,
suggests to me that the plastic fence is, in fact, meant to represent prison
bars.

The level above that one is the Enemy Re-Programming Center, which is another
room consisting entirely of stickers. It features a seated robot hooked up to
some kind of mind-altering helmet. The robot also looks suspiciously like
Scooter, which makes me wonder if he wasn't originally a Renegade by allegiance
who was brainwashed into serving Leader-1. (Scooter *was* described as an
"Enemy Robot Scooter" in at least one official piece of GoBots paraphrenalia
that I'm aware of, so this isn't an entirely unreasonable assumption.) There's
also an Alien Detention Center, but it must be a high-security area since it's
not accessible via the main elevator. It looks like Pumper's brother works
there (no, not Dumper, his *other* brother).

The Strategy Chamber is a small, rounded room that features a map of the Earth,
showing key points all over the globe. Apparently, unlike the Transformers,
the GoBots operate on every continent in the world. (Perhaps these points on
the map are the locations of their other Command Centers?) Judging by the
stickers, it looks as if Spay-C is among the Guardians who works in Strategic
Command, so let it never be said that the Guardians aren't equal-opportunity
employers. There's also a room somewhere within the forehead of the Command
Center, in which a silhouetted Royal-T can be spotted. He's in the room with
another figure who looks like Tank. (Of course, just about any shadowy GoBot
with a wide head looks like Tank, to me. He's a pretty generic-looking guy,
really.)

The Command Center was designed for regular GoBots figures, who made up the
bulk of the toy line, but not Super GoBots. (Curiously, the box pictures Herr
Fiend outside the base. Not only is he a Super GoBot, but he's also a
Renegade. Even more bizarre is that the box also shows Tank *inside* the base,
and armed to boot.) You really can't fit more than two figures in any given
room, and some of the more unconventional designs probably won't fit too well
(I doubt Scorp would fit in the De-Materializer), but that still gives you a
maximum capacity of around 12 Guardians. The base also doubles as a carrying
case, since you can close it up with GoBots still inside, and tote it around by
grasping the entire base by the scary robot's forehead. (No, really. The
instructions actually say that's a carrying handle.)

All in all, the Command Center is pretty cool. Unlike the Transformers
city-bases, which seem to be intended primarily to interact with toys in
vehicle mode (hence all the ramps and helipads and things on Metroplex and
Fortress Maximus), the Command Center is designed for use with the GoBots in
robot mode. Also unlike the Transformers playsets, the Command Center will
accommodate just about any of the standard GoBots figures (you simply can't
integrate Metroplex or Fort Max with toys any larger than the Mini Autobots or
Scramble City mini-vehicles).

I alos want to say that I *really* like the kid-friendly instructions. They
specifically suggest that you peel the decals slowly to avoid tearing them, for
example. (Some of them are *really* big. There are *no* paint applications on
this toy; it's either different colors of plastic, or stickers.) They also
remind you to tightly close the doors before atempting to lug the Command
Center around with GoBots inside of it. I think that's just amazingly cool.
We need more instructions that actually sound like they *care* how you treat
your toys. (DinoZaurs did a bang-up job on this, too.)

So, anyway. Probably a huge chunk of the reason why I'm so enamored with this
toy is that I have fond childhood memories of it. Your mileage, obviously, may
vary considerably. :)

Zobovor... you know I've gotten bored with the current Transformers line when I
start cranking out the GoBots and Playskool reviews. :)

As an owner of the Japanese version of the Power Suit gestalt, I can
attest that it was NOT a Tonka innovation, but another carryover from
Machine Robo.

It's funny you mention the Gobot Command Center and the Technodrome, I just had
to sell both.

Funny thing is I sold them and bought the Gobot Renegade power-suits.

I remember the box and commercial for the Command Center, the De-Materializer
room is supposed to be a disintegration room, the Railing is supposed to be
cell-like bars.

Damn I miss Rest-Q, I never really liked him, I mostly miss him because I lost
him, as opposed to selling him, like I did with a bunch of my others. And now
I'm starting to regret selling my others. I did, however, keep all my
Super-Gobots, they are really great toys, some of them better in terms of
quality than a number of Transformers. I still have the big-German tank
(Destroyer?) I got when I was four, though I haven't seen any of his treads for
15 years.

Wow. I've had that toy for a good fifteen or sixteen years now, and I've
never, ever been able to figure out how the detection system worked. Thank
you, Zob. You've solved one of the great mysteries of my childhood. Now if
only I could figure out how babies are made.

GoBot babies?

Y'know, that dematerialization chamber used to freak me out when I was a

Well, when a man loves a woman, he just can't keep his mind on nothin' else.
He'd trade the world for a good thing he's found.

If she's bad, he can't see it; why, she can do no wrong. Turn his

Word, dude. I bought one DinoZaur, the Brontosaurus, and it was pretty
neat, but I really liked the instructions, they just made me love that
line, and I bought the rest of 'em. Hasbro may make cool toys too, but
I never got teary reading their instructions and all touched to think
that they really cared that I had fun and took good care of the toys so
I would continue to have fun. Instructions with heart, man, heart.
That's what Transformers needs.

Gobots are about the size of Mini-Cons, maybe bigger. So most of the
Minibots (and probably Scramble City bots) would work with it.

I knew it! Guardians really are evil! I've always known it ever since
"Renegade Rampage" when they blew up a whole planet just to nail 6
Renegades (which they failed to do, I might add)!

If so, I think we need a bigger dematerialization chamber.

It did roll on the ground in at least one episode in my memory, but
usually it was a flight mode, and they used the walker. For some reason,
Thruster was only a mobile base once in the pilot for a few minutes and
remained a spaceship the rest of the series.

Age actually took it's toll on mine. Some of the outer stickers fell off
and I lost at least one inside. That may have to do with living in the attic
of the house, though. Sure it's all made up nice like a bedroom should, but
it gets awful hot up here.

I stopped trying to put them on after a while. Some of them don't have a
good spot to put them on, and it's a pain to place such small sticker on
anything and have it look half-way decent.

Don't forget the Cherry Antifreese. :) Don't forget, even as far back as
the early promo illustrated booklet, they "replace worn-out parts of their
bodies" with machinery. They've been cyborgs from day one, as also mentioned
in the episode "Sentinel". (One of the few episodes I can recall quite well.

I don't know which one should have been there, but I made that floor the
Detention Center. Seemed the right place for prision bars.

The aforementioned illustrated booklet also confused Leader-1 and
Blaster, so I'm not so sure about that. Maybe they undid some mind control.
Unless the place is like that machine from Star Trek that messes with your
head. (There's probably a few of those, actually, but hopefully you know
which one I mean. :)

I definately like mine, even with the missing stickers. I still have it
out, but right now it's in vehicle form and in a location that isn't level
enough to populate the Center in base mode.

It could be better, but I like them for what they are.

Yes there was. I remember rolling my eyes at it cause I could think
of many other characters that would have made a better super gobot.

I also remember hating how the head on the toy woudln't let me show
his face like they did in the cartoon while he was in scooter mode.

Ah, I didn't know that. (I used to have one or two of the exo-suits, but I
never assembled a complete set so I eventually gave them away.)

Now, I have a more difficult question... from what I've been able to gather,
Bandai bought the rights to the original MachineRobo designs from Popy, and
continued to create new toys for the line after the Popy designs were
exhausted. What I want to know is whether there's a cut-off point where you
can go, "See this? Right here, this is when the Popy designs ended and the
Bandai designs began." Is there?

Zobovor, never owned Thruster as a kid, but might end up getting one just so my
Renegade toys have a place to hang out.

Are you sure about that? I know there were Super GoBot versions of Leader-1,
Cy-Kill, Vamp and Spay-C (which looked nothing like the smaller Spay-C in robot
mode), but I've never heard of an oversized Scooter toy. Dude, I would *so*

Working on that. I already have one Scooter toy on the way (got him and Loco
for a dollar, A DOLLAR! *SHAKES WALLET*), so all I need is one more so that I
can combine the two.

Zobovor, always thought it was a little disturbing that Scooter didn't have an
actual nose in the cartoon... just two little nostril slits. (Maybe Vortex

Two Scooter toys. I'm going to build one that has two faces: the normal face
in robot mode, and a second face that will flip around on a swiveling panel,
for use when he's in vehicle mode.

Zobovor, remembers being very irritated that they did this constantly with
characters on the show, but that none of the toys were actually able to *do*
it. (Oh, we are *so* overdue for Challenge of the GoBots PVC figurines...)

Hmm...I really have no idea. I don't know enough about the changeover
point between Bandai and Popy to tell. I don't think copyright stamps
would be enough, as Bandai simply reissued the Popy designs with its own
stamp. And as far as I can see from other items taken over from Popy,
the design aesthetic remained pretty similar, so that's not a clue--but
I could also not be looking in the right places.

designers of the Jetfire mold) *is* Bandai, now.

Both companies were bought out by Bandai, from what I've read.

I think he's mixing up Cy-Kill and Scooter. Unless he is talking about
the BMW motorcycle known as Throttle in the USA, but that one:
A) doesn't look like Scooter at all.
B) Is blue (except in Europe, where he was silver).

No other Super Gobot motorcycles come to mind.

Yeah, he came with rubber treads that were a pain-in-the-ass to get on once
they fell off (which happened quite easily) and they quickly hardened, and
probably broke. I probably haven't seen mine for 15 years because they turned
into little piles of black dust. Just like the "seat belt" (read: Rubber band)
on my ninja turtles Blimp. I touched it last week and it simply fell apart.

Interesting enough, Zeemon was only available with a Popy copyright

Actually, Bandai and Popy designs are one and the same. Bandai is the
parent company to Popy. Bandai has had it's trademark visible on most
of the Machine Robo line, including the very first releases from the
line. All original packaged Machine Robo guys also bear a Popy
trademark notice, from MR-01 to MR-54 and the Devil Invaders. Later
on, Plex took over desiging the toys, and they had their mark listed,
and there was no longer a Popy mark. This is the late '86-'88 era. I
think I read in Hyper Hobby that Plex has also worked on the Machine
Robo Rescue line, but I am not 100% sure.

The original Big Shuttle Robo in Japan was a new powered up version of
the old smaller Shuttle Robo. I haven't seen the whole series just

In comparison to the regular Insecticons, the Deluxe Insecticons are
really nice. Decent articulation et al. The molds were originally used
for a Takatoku toyline called "Beetras".

was that the red car? I dont remember the show much, I remember a dorky
scooter, a dumb ass motor cycle, a jet wanna be, a silver car there the hood
was its head, a combiner team similar to the Stunticons, some powersuit
things and teh giant base and a red car, but I dont remember any specifics
like names or what the show was like. I remember hating it cuz I thought
they were ripping off transformers. And it was dorky in my opinion.

actually I kinda sorta remember an ep where the "bad guys" made them selves
small or something like that and I remember this movie with a buncha rocks
guys in it. I admit I watched the show cuz where I live Transformers wasn't
being broadcast and gobots was so I watched gobots to get ideas of how to
play with my Tfs, sad I know but it was all i had. Anyway wow I guess I
typed more than I was gonna but after reading the rest of this thread I just
started remembering things form gobots and since Zob mentions the base,
which I had as kid, it sorta almost makes me want it and maybe some other
gobots too. Only cuz the store that sells Tfs here also had some gobots and
the cars with fists in them that I assume were a combiner team actually look
cool. Anyways just wanted to share my thoughts on it all.

By the way Zobovor, thanks for the review, I had considered buying one of
these things and after reading your review I might wanna buy it now.

Latter all Peace Out

You anti-reusers can thank Spider-Man and Toy Biz for that. Plus I don't
think Hasbro can release this one, since it wasn't a Takara. Or something
like that. Don't you hate when you don't know how to make your point, then
realize it's because you forgot what it was?

Venom and Shrapnel are the best of the Insecticons to me.
Shrapnel has the cool talking skillz and Venom looks cool.

There are several red Gobots.

Have a look on http://www.toyarchive.com

They have quite complete listings.

Several possibilities, but since you say 'jet wanna be', I think that
probably means Fittor.

Baron von Joy (BTW, the driving compartment became his head, not the

Puzzler. The best Gobot combiner IMHO.

The show was bad, I give you that.

The toys, however, come from a Japanese toyline named Machine Robo,
and actually were around before Transformers.

If they have a Puzzler, I'd say: Get it! It's a really nice combiner
for that time.

Thomas Hamann, owns 5/6th of a Puzzler.. :(

Actually, Gobots came first--but then TF came out with a story, comic
& TV show, which Gobots didn't have. So then Tonka gave Gobots a
series...It's kinda like how Digimon came first, then Pokemon came out
some years later and Digimon capitalized off its success.

Hey, don't feel bad about not having official TF media to help you
play with your toys--Wheelie and Cosmos were best of buds and
Powermaster Prime was the Lord of Evil in my universe. God, I was
f---ed up.

Or twice as crappy, seeing as the original Insecticons were kinda
crappy. =P

They had a car with fists in it, but the store doesnt sell toys anymore.
They turned into a locksmith and quit selling all toys and comics.
