Sorry if this has been asked, and answered, before, but I couldn't
find a post by me asking it in a search for posts with my e-mail in it
on google groups (thus, ones I made). I'm especially curious about
the Omnibots, and why Reflector was allowed in the G1 cartoon.

SPECIAL NOTE: As far as I've heard all mail order transformers came in plain
white or brown boxes. you had to send in robots points too.

Here's all the Transformer mail orders I know of:
(1)TReflector,(2)Optimus Prime,
(3)Megatron(4)Starscream,(5)Thundercracker.(6)Wheeljack,(7)Sunstreaker,(8)
Ratchet.
(9)3 Omnibots that were sold seperately.
(10)Time warrior watch.

There's probably more. those are all I know of.

Can't forget Topspin and Twintwist, the "jumpstarters"! I remember getting
mine in little white mailer-boxes.

I got Reflector in a plain white box marked "Transformers Camera" I
think. Unfortunately I blacked the text out with marker & put a
Transformers sticker on the box.

My guess is that, at one point early in the production of the cartoon, Hasbro
had intended to sell Reflector in stores along with the other 1984 Decepticons,
but plans changed and Reflector's toy was delayed after he was written into the
show. At one point, Hasbro must have changed their minds completely about
selling the toy, since they ordered the character removed from the show (he
disappeared during the early second season, subsequently appearing only briefly
in the background in episodes like "The Golden Lagoon" and the movie).
Ironically, the toy wasn't offered by Hasbro until 1986, well after the
character had any chance of appearing in the show again. He was, however, sold
in stores in Japan.

In 1985, Hasbro offered the Omnibots through mail-order as well as the three
Powerdasher toys and a digital watch called Time Warrior that did not
transform. Hasbro only acknowledged the Powerdasher jet in catalogs
(mentioning off-handedly that the Powerdasher was constantly evolving) but in
fact all three styles were available through mail-order.) The Omnibots were
larger than Mini Autobots but smaller than Autobot Cars, so they really didn't
fit into any of Hasbro's existing price points. Selling them through
mail-order was probably their solution to this problem. None of the toys
available exclusively by mail order were featured in any of the official
cartoons or comics, except for the recent Dreamwave stories that seem to revel
in featuring obscure characters in the background.

In 1986, Hasbro added Reflector to the lineup as well as several toys
previously available in stores: Sunstreaker, Wheeljack, Ratchet, Mirage, and
Thundercracker. (None of these toys were being sold in stores by this point.)
It's worth mentioning that this year saw the phasing out of spring-loaded
weapons, so the mail-order of Thundercracker, for example, had redesigned
missile launchers that incorporated a flexible plastic tab to hold the missiles
in place. (What's really interesting is that the 1986 mail-order form is
actually addressed to Ultra Magnus.) There was also a promotional tie-in with
the theatrical film, and "Movie Edition" versions of Optimus Prime and Megatron
were made available (same toys as before, only with an accompanying certificate
not previously offered).

By 1987, Hasbro was still offering all of the above toys through mail-order in
addition to three of the Mini-Autobots: Cosmos, Warpath, and Hubcap. (The
mail-order catalog mistakenly referred to him as Cliffjumper, even though
Hubcap was quite clearly pictured.)

1988 was the last year Hasbro produced a mail-order catalog, which included all
the above toys except for the Omnibots, Powerdashers, and Time Warrior.

Understand that I'm speaking strictly about the mail-order toys available in
America. In Japan, for example, Ratchet and Dirge were available only through
mail-order and weren't sold in stores.

As a kid, I always wondered what these "movie editions" were. I was so
incredibly curious. 15+ years later, I finally know! What exactly was the
certificate? Are there pics somewhere?

I actually wrote a letter to Hasbro at the time asking them what the movie
editions were because I didn't want to miss out on something cool, but
they never wrote back to me. Lousy bastards.

I specifically remember getting Wheeljack, Sunstreaker, Ratchet, and
Thundercracker in the retail packaging through the mail order program. My
grandparents had me save up robot points so they could order Thundercracker
for me for Christmas one year...and I have footage of me opening
Thundercracker out of the retail packaging on Christmas at their house.
Hey...it's not a documented blue Bluestreak sealed in a US box, but it is
solid proof that I'm not dreaming or having false memories of getting retail
pack TFs in the mail :o)

(For those who can't quite make out the text, it reads: "This certificate
proves ________ is a faithful follower of The Transformers and the recipient of
a special movie edition Transformer. The bearer is a firm believer in the
basic principles of Cybertronic law and will help the Transformers anyway [sic]
he can."

(Not only are you not required to favor a specific faction, but apparently
you're allowed to get away with legal technicailities. Sounds like a
Decepticon drafted this document.)
