---------
This is a request for discussion on the moving of the Lego toy
newsgroup to the mainstream of the rec heirarcy. It includes the creation
of a misc newsgroup for the know other interests people have in a variety
of toys that are not Legos.

This offical RFD comes out of a desire to see this newsgroup
receive the wider distrubution that it could benifit from. It's
continious activity in the nine months that alt.toys.lego has been
around is proof that interest exists and is stable if not growing
in having a USENET newsgroup for discussion.

Proposed names of groups:
-------------------------
rec.toys.lego
rec.toys.misc

Proposed moderation for both groups:
------------------------------------
Unmoderated

rec.toys.lego charter:
----------------------
To provide a forum for the discussion of all things and experiences
relating to the Lego(tm) and Duplo(tm) construction toys. Including
interesting models that one has built, experiences one has had using legos,
or questions about how to build particular componets.

rec.toys.misc charter:
----------------------
To provide a forum for discussion of non-Lego toy topics, from
Barbi Dolls to My Little Pony gift sets.

Calendar:
---------
Discussion on the creation of these groups will last until the
30th of October at which time a call for votes will go out, provided that
this RFD has met with aproval.

Note:
-----
Please remember that most new group creation discussion happens
in news.groups, so alt.toys.lego readers might want to tune in for
a while.

Votes must be recieved by 23:59 GMT, 21 December 1993.

This vote is being conducted by a neutral third party. Voting questions
should be directed to Ed Bailey (bai...@hagar.ph.utexas.edu). For questions
about the proposed group, contact David Koblas (kob...@netcom.com).

rec.toys.lego charter:

To provide a forum for the discussion of all things and experiences

relating to the Lego(tm), Duplo(tm) and compatible construction toys.

Including interesting models that one has built, experiences one has had

STANDARD VOTE FORM

You should send MAIL (posts to a group are invalid) to
vot...@calvin.ph.utexas.edu
(just replying by MAIL to this message should work). Posts can not be
counted. You will recieve a reply within a few days after your votes
are recieved which indicates how I think you voted - please mail
corrections immediately.

PLEASE USE THE FORM AS IT IS.

Please do not delete anything between the "-=-=-=-=-" lines - and most
certainly do not monkey with the group names. Votes will be tallied by an
automatic program and if it can't determine your vote you will be asked to
re-vote.

For each group, simply add your vote in the appropriate space on the same
line. Recognized votes are Yes, No, For, and Against. Yes and For are
equivalent, as are No and Against. Capitalization is not important. If you
don't want to vote on a particular group, just leave the space blank. Don't
worry about spacing of the columns or any quote characters ">" that your
reply inserts.

You may _NOT_ do a combined vote - i.e., "I vote for all of them" or
"I vote against all of them." Please use the form.

You may only vote once, regardless of how many accounts you may have. Later
votes replace previous ones. Forwarded or proxy votes are invalid.

Standard Guidelines for voting apply - one vote per person regardless of how
many accounts you have, one vote per account regardless of how many people
use that account. 100 more YES votes than NO votes and 2/3 of all votes being
YES are the requirements for group creation.

First of all, I will take full blame, uhhh, responsibility for
even suggesting the rec.toys.construct(ion) hierarchy; when it
was all said and done, it was figured that it would be best to
go with rec.toys.lego and r.t.misc and if any other toy groups
were to be created (eg r.t.transformers, r.t.meccano-erector),
then those people could do it.

After all, how big is the rec.toys hierarchy ever going to get
considering there are all of three alt.toys groups?

Maybe when there is >2 construction type rec.toys newsgroups.

Here's to seeing that rec.toys.lego gets passed! Vote today!

Actually, I'll defer the blame from Ron, there was some concern
that creating rec.toys.lego as the first "real" newsgroup in
the rec.toys heirarcy was a bad trend to start, people wanted a
slightly more general newsgroup name initially. That prompted
the 2nd discussion period.

Thank you everyone for your straw poll voting information, it
helped clear up where people interest lay in the newsgroup name.
The straw poll is now over, and the real vote has begun. If you
sent me a note saying that you liked the idea of rec.toys.lego
during the 2nd discussion period, you will still need to vote
officially.

I have been gettin some mail from people asking why do we need
a rec.toys.lego newsgroup, since they already is alt.toys.lego.
The simply reason is distribution, the alt.* heirarcy is not
received everywhere, I would hope that we could double the
readership of the lego newsgroup just by moving it to the rec.*
heirarcy.

No way! We would have been overrun by the Erector Set folks, not
to mention the Fisher-Technik [both old and new] people.

ObLEGO: Finally built my Shock Cycle last night. Complex! I think I
could have done a better job and modeled a real motorcycle while I was
at it. Why didn't they make it a BMW boxer [R-bike] instead of something
akin to a Moto Guzzi?
