I'm just curios. The more i think about it. I think yellow is a pretty dang
cool color for the vehicles to be; but is there some specific reason in the at
myth as to why they are yellow?

I'm currently thinking of doing a 4 or 5 man at team and grabing a coupla cheap
20 dollar vehicles i saw around town and panting them the bright yellow like
i've seen on some pictures here.

Anyway, just curios about the whole at myth and all.

Given the spirit of the times, I'd say the things going for yellow
were:

1. It's bright! It's mod! It's happening! It gets kids' attention!
2. It isn't Olive Drab.

Thanks to all the Vietnam protests, GIJoe went in the dumper (as far
as sales go) in 1968. Between the bright colors and the "peace sign"
AT logo, Hasbro was doing what it could to put the military era out of
the minds of buyers.

Judging from the sales response, it must have worked! Check out John
Michlig's big book, it has a lot of great information about how GIJoe
was sold over the years.

Of course, we who were kids in the 70s were still clamoring for more
weapons, but Hasbro's anti-war stance kept our mothers happy, and mom
was the one paying the freight back then.

As an example of parental overreaction in the early 70s, I knew one
kid who's parents took all his GIJoe weapons away. He was only allowed
to keep one flare gun! Poor guy. He did have a lot of cool (but
non-violent) Billy Blastoff stuff, though.

Watch any 1970's spy movies...especially 007...You'll notice the bright
orange and yellow jumpsuits...the 70's gave the COld War a more modern,
almost SCIFI at the time effect. Bright (and ugly) colors were all the rave
in the 70s. Oranges, browns, avacado greens (my stove is still)

And like the man said....it wasn't OD

That's true. The reason i'm starting to like the yellow idea for my team's
vehicles is that it's just such and damned loud obnoxious color.

My at guys will have weapons though<G> Infact, what i'm shooting for with my
team is proabbly more of an A TEAM Mercenary deal. But hey.... i like the
yellow so i'll call it AT.

I always wondered if the at logo was supposed to be a sort've "Peace Sign"
incognito thing.

So basically, at was the late 60's war era interpetation of joe. Today it seems
to have evolved to a more of Indianna Jones/ the shadow sort've adventure thing
to me.

Basically my guys(i proabbly shouldnt even call them an AT team reallY) are
gonna be more of an A TEAM sorta deal where they use weapons and crap but
always drive yellow vehicles.

As many of you know here my MAIN joe project is doing a full authentic vietnam
era light infantry unit but that's an expensive long term project and the at
guys are just a sort've fun little project i can throw like 50 bucks or so a
month into and have something cool to display.

I have a Jungle Rhino and an M998 Troop carrier that I'm painting Screaming
Yellow for my Adventure Team, and they will also have the big red and black
AT logo on the hood and doors.
I think the yellow was a cool color in the 70's, as it was a colorful time
the we lived in, and the color also adds for easy identification in rescue
situations.

I read a great quuote from one of the Hassenfelds somewhere - someone
asked him if people would think the AT logo was supposed to resemble a
Peace symbol, and he responded "I hope so!"

I think there are tons of ways to interpret Joe these days. My team
of kitbashed AT guys focus on Search and Rescue missions, with some
meteorology/natural disaster stuff thrown in. But I also have a
Weapons Expert for those delicate situations where some hot lead would
come in handy. ;-)

Here's a quote from Rick Behling in "GI Joe: The Story of America's
Favorite Man of Action" about this exact thing:

"Red is a toy color. So is blue. Red, blue, and white-primary colors-
are what Fisher Price made preschool toys out of. Now, first of all,
GI Joe is not a toy; he is a real--a living, breathing, thinking
thing. That's what you sell to kids. It's too expensive to get
camouflage by using multiple coats of paint, so, looking at other color
alternatives, yellow is a nice aggressive color not identified with any
age group, and it looks great on TV--an exciting color to put in a
commercial. A deliberate decision was made that yellow would be the
color we would carry throughout the line."

I was one of the lucky one, in the mid 70s I had all sorts
of weapons.

Two that I remember are the Bazooka and the Howitzer, both of which
fired shells. I also had all sorts of rifles, SMGs and pistols.

Then I grew up, joined the navy and gave it all to my kid brother.
Within 6 months they were all lost, sold or stolen.

One of the BIG reasons is that at the time, Jacques Cousteau and his
team were the living embodiment of scientific adventurism--and THEY
painted all their vehicles high visibility yellow to make sure they
could be spotted in 200+ feet of blue green water! The idea that hi-viz
yellow has carried on ever since--the eco-vehicles of Captain Planet
and a lot of recent underwater/land explorer toy sets being the most
recent examples. Face it--yellow is the color of scientific guys doing
cool stuff.

I think the Sealab underwater habitats were yellow as well. At least
that was the color on the plastic model's box. <g>

You know what - that WOULD be a nice real-world explanation. But, actually,
for GI Joe equipment it had everything to do with what photographed well on
TV, avoiding "toy" colors, and the fact that camouflage was non-practical..

In fact, whole features were created (like the "articulated" vehicle feature
on the Mobile Headquarters) with the aim of looking good in a 1-2 second
clip on the commercial.

Fortunately for us, YELLOW just happened to be adopted by many real-life
exploration vehicles, so we could feel real.

According to those who should know...

Yellow is the international high visability color for heavy equipment such as
bulldozers. Many firetrucks and other emergency vehicles are now yellow.

Red & orange are considered too hard to see at night.

AHA! So what you're saying is that Cousteau was an Adventure Team

The truth is now out. Way out.

Speaking of way out, my theory is that the Pawtucket Boys came up with the
yellow colored sub idea after a few puffs on the hookah and a listen to the
BEATLES. :-)
