Over the years, Ive built all of these but the samurai. If any of you
would be interested, I could post construction tips and techniques to
a web page and you could try them on your own.

Its much more enjoyable and satisfying to do them on your own than to
just buy them ready made in a box. Takes a bit of time, but the end
product is something you can always be proud of.

I see your point, but that gets down to the diff between a collector
and a builder.

Its the diff between teaching yourself to draw and painting a
masterpiece to hang on your wall......and simply cutting a picture out
of a magazine and hanging it on the wall.

Youre obviously more of a collector

I myself prefer to create things and add them to my display than to
just open a box and stick something on the shelf.

Think of it this way....if Hasbro had made that figure you won 1st
place with, then you wouldnt have won 1st place for building it.....so
which do you value more, a one of a kind figure that you won with, or
one more mass produced figure that millions of folks have, to add to
your collection?

When it comes to G.I.Joe, I suppose that's true. But you make an interesting
analogy given that, by profession, I'm a graphic artist. I DO enjoy building
and creating things. But my bottom line when it comes to customizing a G.I.Joe
is that if I can't make it look as close as possible TO a mass-produced figure
-- that is, if I were to take one of "my" 3 3/4" Joes and one of Hasbro's, and
stand them side by side, and show them to someone who might be familiar with
G.I.Joe but not necessarily with all the characters, they shouldn't be able to
tell the difference, I feel that I haven't achieved the objective. To date --
I've come darn close, but even so...

It's not a matter of value, really. Let me put it this way -- if Hasbro had
made all the characters that I made -- at least those that were existing
characters from the comic book or animated series, then there probably
wouldn't've been much of a contest for me to bother to enter.

By the way, my attitude also extends to Hasbro's 3 3/4" Mortal Kombat line, of
which I have added a considerable number to and am presently studying MK4 to
see who I think I can get away with. I suppose my point revolves around
CHARACTERS. I like Mortal Kombat. I like Oktober Guard. And if I HAVE to make
them myself to HAVE them as part of my collection, then so be it. I've come up
with a handful of original characters over the years, but my favorites of my
customs -- are the ones that Hasbro should have made in the first place.

I, for one, would be VERY interested in your instructions on these,
esp. the Knight(s), Viking, Gladiator, and Pirate (that's MOST of them
isn't it ;-)).

Ever done Egyptian, Babylonian, or Maya warriors?

I don't think there will ever be pre-built Joe's to suit EVERYONE's
tastes and wish lists, and some folks will want to do it "better" than
the pre-made ones anyway.

Personally, I tend to lean more towards the builder side, but I can
see both perspectives, and IMO there's room for both kinds of Joes in
the Sandbox (no?)

I recently finished a 14th century Knight Joe outfit, with mini
chainmail and pigfaced bascinet helmet, etc... it was painstaking work
done in aluminum, steel, wood, and epoxy putty. But the finished piece
is something I'm proud of. I also have a Roman Soldier Joe in complete
outfit with Roman Lorica armour on. I'd be happy to post pics of these
guys if anyone would like to see em. Medieval armour is my personal
favorite, but I do not expect that hasbro would ever craft any for
joe. But, if they did....I'd be the first to order it.
I started doing medieval type Joe's for some friends that were
into Fantasy gaming, and were tired of the tiny miniatures and asked
if I could craft "outfits and gear" for their characters in 1/6 scale
to fit joe and Jane. I did and it went well. I have comleted a variety
of fantasy stuff too. Its fun, but because I grew up with fuzzy head
joe, I'll always be loyal to my kung-fu grip paramilitary hero.

I'm getting my camera out now!!! I forgot to mention before...I found
a 1/6 scale horse at a flea market that fits the "historical Joe's" to
a Tee, I had to craft a saddle and bridle from leather but it looks
great ( this is not the Bambi eyed Barbi horse)...I'll post a pic of a
mounted knight also
