Is anyone familiar with what I assume is some type of test/diagnostic
mode in Furbys? Or know of a web page that describes it in more
detail?

Below is what I have found...

WARNING: This could result in the restarting of Furby, so don't try it
on your favorite Furby. He may not like it. :)

To get a Furby into test mode, hold it upright and while pressing the
pet and tickle sensors at the same time (hug), hit the reset button.
Furby will now beep in response to the sensors.

And by experimenting on my Santa Furby I have found what I believe is
at least part of the sequence that may be used to test new Furbys.

(NOTE: I could only get the full sequence to work on Santa Furby and
not on a Gen 1 Furby. - I do have two other non-gen 1 Furbys, but do
not want to risk having them go back to day 1.)

While in test mode...
- Tickle Furby: If Furby beeps once and then three times, proceed.
Otherwise give Furby a hug, tickle again and listen for beeps.
- Turn Furby upside down: Furby will beep. (Furby will now beep
whenever you change its position.)
- Tilt Furby backward: Furby will beep
- Hug Furby (hold): Furby will beep
- Release Hug: Furby will start dancing
- Stand Furby upright, Hug, Pause, Hug Again, Wait: Furby will stop
dancing and beep
- Hug Furby: Furby will open mouth
- Press tongue switch: Furby will close mouth
- Cover Furbys eyes/sensor: Furby will close eyes
- Make a loud noise: Furby will open eyes and mouth. He should now
look like an in-the-box new Furby does.

CAUTION: At this stage, Furby appears to be listening for IR. When I
accidently set one of my other Furbys in front of the Santa test
subject, Santa buzzed and closed his eyes. When I woke Santa he had
restarted with a new name. It may also have drained the batteries,
since I left Santa Furby like that for 12+ hours. Oooops.

However, if you just his reset at this stage, Furby appears to return
to his usual self. He may be "sick" and very hungry though. Why, I
don't know?, but two new Furbys I've bought were born sick and took a
lot of feeding to make them well.
