Ariens snowblower spark plug connector

When replacing the sparkplug on my Ariens classic 24 snowblower, I separated the rubber cable from the end of the metal tube, and it won't go back in. Is it safe to peel off the rubber hood at the end of the rubber cable, or to pry apart enough of the metal tube to make connection. Any other solutions?
