White sentenced to life in prison

Darell White's next attempt at athletic glory could be at the Louisiana
State Penitentiary rodeo.
Whether the former Bolton High School and Alexandria Aces star has the
skills or inclination to be the in the prison rodeo is unclear.
But if he wants, he'll have plenty of time to learn because White, 28, of
Alexandria was ordered Friday to serve three terms of life imprisonment,
plus an additional 35 years.
The sentences were for a series of rapes and other crimes committed near the
Red River the past two springs. White targeted couples, usually teen-age
girls and their dates, and sometimes locked the boys in the trunk while
attacking the girls.
White wore clothing that partially hid his face. That led victims to
describe White Friday as "a faceless coward."
In September, a Rapides Parish jury found White guilty of 29 felony charges.
The charges involved six separate attacks along the river. Four were on the
Alexandria levee while the other two were in Pineville.
In announcing the sentences Friday, 9th Judicial District Judge Ross Foote
said he could find only one "mitigating" or favorable factor for White: the
lack of a prior criminal record.
In contrast, Foote found numerous "aggravating" circumstances indicating the
need for a harsh sentence. Those included White being armed with a knife,
the ages of the victims, White threatening to kill the victims and because
he committed a series of similar crimes.
Foote said most sentences "serve many functions" such as rehabilitation as
well as punishment.
But rehabilitation wasn't an issue for White, whose crimes include those
mandatory sentences of life imprisonment.
Foote came up with a complicated sentencing scheme to let each victim feel
White was being punished for his crimes against them,.
All of the attacks except one, where the victims escaped by driving away, in
volved multiple crimes.
Foote said he was at a loss to understand White.
"These crimes were driving by some force I don't understand," Foote said.
Foote gave White the opportunity to speak prior to sentencing, but White
declined. His attorney, Blane Williams, did file a formal notice of appeal
on White's convictions and sentences.
Sitting beside the prosecutor, Assistant District Attorney Loren Lampert,
three of the victims, all teen-age girls, gave victim impact testimony prior
to White's sentencing. A fourth victim wanted to testify but couldn't
attend, so he sent a letter that Lampert read into the court record.
One of those victims was a girl whose memory of her 16th birthday is one of
being raped and forced to perform oral sex in a levee bathroom.
"My mother said I laid in bed in the dark under the covers crying for days,"
the victim testified.
The victim said she has been angry and traumatized, but added, "I'm healing
and doing better since he's been convicted."
Another victim testified "My life has never been the same ... Every time I
closed my eyes I saw his eyes."
The victim said she once feared White would never be caught. She said that
emotion has been replaced with "joy" in seeing him convicted and sentenced.
The third victim testified that "No one ever thinks they will be the victim
of such a devastating attack."
She said White will never know "the emotional and physical breakdown that I
experience every day."
"He will never ever begin to feel the pain and anger I and the other victims
feel," the victim testified. ".... Pain and anger is not someone one wants
to cope with every waking moment of their life."
The fourth victim, the one who sent the letter, contrasted White's actions
with those of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks.
"We know what it's like to be attacked by a faceless coward," the victim
wrote.
