Canada Day - Governor General Lord Monck proclaims a celebration by all
Her Majesty's loving subjects throughout Canada of the anniversary of
the formation of the union of the British North America provinces in a
federation under the name of Canada on July 1, 1867. The July 1 holiday
was established by statute on May 15, 1879, under the name Dominion Day.
In 1958, the Secretary of State of Canada arranges for an annual
observance on Parliament Hill, with a Trooping the Colours ceremony in
the afternoon, a sunset ceremony in the evening followed by a mass band
concert and fireworks display. From 1968-80, the government added
televised multicultural and professional concerts on Parliament Hill,
and a month-long celebration called Festival Canada. In 1980 the
National Committee that planned Canada's Birthday celebrations started
to sponsor local celebration across Canada, including fireworks displays
in 15 major cities. On October 27, 1982, the name Dominion Day will be
changed to Canada Day. Ottawa, Ontario

On this day in 1975, Jaws, a film directed by Steven Spielberg that made
countless viewers afraid to go into the water, opens in theaters. The
story of a great white shark that terrorizes a New England resort town
became an instant blockbuster and the highest-grossing film in movie
history until it was bested by 1977’s Star Wars. Jaws was nominated for
an Academy Award in the Best Picture category and took home three
Oscars, for Best Film Editing, Best Original Score and Best Sound. The
film, a breakthrough for director Spielberg, then 27 years old, spawned
three sequels.

A gas explosion in a Chinese coal mine kills 111 workers on this day in
2002. Perhaps the most disturbing aspect of this tragic incident is that
it was not unique. Poor safety regulations in China have long made
mining there an extremely hazardous occupation.

Thought of the Day
I have come to the conclusion that politics are too serious a matter to
be left to the politicians.
