War of 1812 - Battle of Chippewa - US Maj Gen Jacob Brown, with
Winfield Scott and Elzear Ripley, defeats British Maj Gen Phineas Riall
and 1,800 British at Battle of Street's Creek (Battle of Chippawa);
Riall, wsho was nearsighted, had mistaken the invading American regulars
for militia, and abandoned a strong position to attack Brown's entire
army of more than 3,000; British retreat back toward Burlington,
destroying Chippawa Bridge to prevent pursuit; 148 British dead, 48
Americans. Chippawa, Ontario
When Riall realized his error he exclaimed "Those are regulars by god!"
Scott had issued his troops with grey jackets like those of the militia.
July 5, 1921
After Judge Hugo Friend denies a motion to quash the indictments against
the major league baseball players accused of throwing the 1919 World
Series, a trial begins with jury selection. The Chicago White Sox
players, including stars Shoeless Joe Jackson, Buck Weaver, and Eddie
Cicotte, subsequently became known as the “Black Sox” after the scandal
was revealed.
July 5, 1946
On July 5, 1946, French designer Louis Reard unveils a daring two-piece
swimsuit at the Piscine Molitor, a popular swimming pool in Paris.
Parisian showgirl Micheline Bernardini modeled the new fashion, which
Reard dubbed “bikini,” inspired by a news-making U.S. atomic test that
took place off the Bikini Atoll in the Pacific Ocean earlier that week.
