John Cabot (Giovanni Caboto Montecataluna), a hired Genoese seaman,
reaches Newfoundland (some argue Cape Breton) on the Matthew with his
sons after a 35 day voyage; his second voyage; underwritten by Bristol
merchants and backed by King Henry VII; claims the region for England;
First discovery since Vikings; legend says he called the region St.
John's Isle and entered the harbour of St. John's on the feast day of
John the Baptist. Today is Discovery Day in Newfoundland and Labrador.

Following the rejection of his Continental System by Czar Alexander I,
French Emperor Napoleon orders his Grande Armee, the largest European
military force ever assembled to that date, into Russia. The enormous
army, featuring some 500,000 soldiers and staff, included troops from
all the European countries under the sway of the French Empire.
On December 14, the Grande Armee finally escaped Russia, having suffered
a loss of more than 400,000 men during the disastrous invasion.

Thought of the Day
Politics is not the art of the possible. It consists in choosing between
