The First Dominion Day, celebrating the founding of Canada on July 1,
1867; the holiday was proclaimed on June 20 by Governor General Lord
Monck. The July 1 holiday will be established by statute in 1879, under
the name Dominion Day, and the name will be changed to Canada Day on
October 27, 1982.

Prince Edward Island enters Confederation as the seventh Canadian
province on same terms as BC; former colony establishes a provincial
government; as part of the terms of union, is guaranteed a ferry link,
annual grants, assistance with land law payments, and debt takeover
