War of 1812 - Battle of Ball's Farm - Protected by 100 of Norton's
warriors, hidden in the woods, Merritt's Provincial Dragoons lead a
force of British regulars to Ball's Farm after dawn, where they succeed
in retrieving medical supplies buried after the battle of Fort George.
When the British and Merritt depart, Norton's men start to skirmish with
a few American soldiers, then several hundred US infantry accompanied by
dragoons; most retreat out of musket range, but Lt Eldridge leads some
40 or 50 men of the 13th US Infantry Regiment from Butlers farm to try
and outflank the Mohawks. They fail, and 20 Americans are killed and the
balance captured. Eldridge is surrounded and killed after he shoots one
of the warriors. Four days later, about 19 Alonquin and Nippissing
warriors kill two American dragoons and take one prisoner. US Gen Peter
B. Porter is furious, reporting that "this army lies panic-struck, shut
up and whipped in by a few hundred miserable savages, leaving the whole
of this frontier, except the mile in extent which they (the Americans)
occupy, exposed to the inroads and depredations of the enemy." Ontario

July 8, 1951

On this day in 1951, Paris, the capital city of France, celebrates
turning 2,000 years old. In fact, a few more candles would’ve
technically been required on the birthday cake, as the City of Lights
was most likely founded around 250 B.C.

July 8, 1960

Shot down just two months before while flying a secret mission over
Moscow, CIA pilot Francis Gary Powers is charged with espionage by the
Soviet Union on July 8, 1960. Although he would not be found guilty
until August 17 of the same year, Powers’ indictment signaled a massive
setback in the peace process between the United States and the Soviet Union.
