Prince Edward, Duke of Kent intervenes in an election riot; his close
friend, Louis de Salaberry, is running in a local election for a seat in
the Lower Canadian legislature; with Salaberry in the lead when the
Charlesbourg polling station closes, a group of English voters arrive
late demanding to be allowed to cast their votes for the English
candidate; when a riot breaks out, Edward arrives just as the rioters
are pulling down the voting station; addressing them in French, he
disperses the crowd with these words: “Let me hear no more of the odious
distinctions of French and English. You are all his Britannic Majesty’s
Canadian subjects!”; first time “Canadian” is used to describe both

On June 27, 1950, President Harry S. Truman announces that he is
ordering U.S. air and naval forces to South Korea to aid the democratic
nation in repulsing an invasion by communist North Korea. The United
States was undertaking the major military operation, he explained, to
enforce a United Nations resolution calling for an end to hostilities,
and to stem the spread of communism in Asia. In addition to ordering
U.S. forces to Korea, Truman also deployed the U.S. 7th Fleet to Formosa
(Taiwan) to guard against invasion by communist China and ordered an
acceleration of military aid to French forces fighting communist
guerrillas in Vietnam.

A factory storekeeper in the Nzara township of Sudan becomes ill on this
day in 1976. Five days later, he dies, and the world’s first recorded
Ebola virus epidemic begins making its way through the area. By the time
the epidemic is over, 284 cases are reported, with about half of the
victims dying from the disease.
