I used to believe in the idea that law-enforcement officials recruited
to serve our nation, for the most part, held a higher standard for the law.
Afterall, that is their job. I’ve learned in the past few weeks, this is
simply
a childhood fantasy, and I’ve held on to this belief all too long.
Thirteen days before his 29th birthday, my uncle, Theodore (Teddy)
Laroque III was murdered by an off-duty Detroit police officer. On
September 13th, 1998 the officer’s wife was blocking the street with her car
and Teddy, yelled for her to move the vehicle. The woman’s husband, Officer
Anthony Goree, immediately took offense to Teddy’s comment. Officer Goree
urged Teddy, “Not to talk to his wife like that.” After they exchanged
words, Teddy started to drive away, but Officer Goree didn’t settle for mere
words. Goree, never identifying himself as an officer, retrieved a gun from
his vehicle, and taunted Teddy back. With no idea he was confronting a
trained police officer with a deadly weapon, Teddy put his jeep in reverse.
Within the next few moments, Teddy was shot repeatedly, and died from
massive trauma to the chest.
Anthony claimed he acted out of self-defense. The Detroit Free Press
quoted him as saying Teddy, “Tried to run him over,” and “He thought he may
have a gun.” Evidence strongly suggests this is completely false--a
lie--constructed to cover-up the truth, and what really happened that night.
Autopsy reports confirmed there were no traces of gunpowder on Teddy,
and the damage done to his poor mangled body could have been caused by a
maximum of six shots. Most importantly, all bullet entries were made from
the left side of Teddy’s jeep.
Why were all of the bullet entries from the left? If Teddy were aiming his
vehicle at the officer, all bullet entries would have been from the front,
not his side. Why was there no trace of gunpowder on Teddy? If Teddy was
trying to run him over Anthony would have been close to the vehicle, and
gunpowder residue definitely would have been found.
A neighbor outside watering the grass witnessed the entire event, and
explained the incident as ---and I quote---“It was not self-defense, it was
a vicious killing!”
The first call dispatched to the station was for a “Detroit Union
Representative” to report to the scene. Officer Goree then called in his
colleagues and friends to help “release himself of the consequences of
murder,” believing he was above the laws that govern you and I.
Homicide detective, Sgt. Harvel, urged Teddy’s mother that night to
“Seek legal assistance.” He also showed her a copy of the police report.
Sgt. Harvel suggested she should go to the station in the morning to get a
copy. She went to obtain the report, but the Department refused her a copy,
saying it would be two more weeks. She went back after fourteen days,
hoping to finally receive the report, but left empty-handed after the
department said it would be six more weeks.
On the night of the murder, Teddy’s wife called the Detroit Police
Department, worried about her husband who had never returned from the store.
The department claimed they had no information about a Theodore Laroque, in
spite of the fact the murder had already taken place. The Detroit Police,
about 1:30 a.m., called to inform the family about Teddy, although the story
had already made the 11 o’clock news. Then, Teddy’s brother in-law (and
friend of 15 years) called the Police Department and asked if a Breathalyzer
test had been conducted on the murderer. Officer Visvara got on the phone,
and answered the families concerns with a mere laugh.
Anytime the family tries to get in contact with the homicide detective, Sgt.
Harvel, their calls are routed to one Detective Smoot who withholds all
information.
The man who murdered my uncle has not even been arrested. Officer Goree
continues in his regular daily duties-- including work-- while Teddy lie in
his grave.
Theodore Laroque III was robbed from his three, now fatherless children,
a now single mother with no consistent income, and many friends and family
who are devastated by the senseless death of someone who meant so much to so
many people.
Teddy was a great father, a loving husband, and someone who had such
charisma and passion for life . . . He didn’t deserve to die.
Anthony Goree should be arrested and pay for the malicious crime he
committed. Most of all, I want him to spend his every waking moment in
prison realizing the suffering he caused to those close to Teddy. Because
we will not only live with the grief of losing Teddy for the rest of our
lives, but also wonder what Teddy went through in those last few moments of
his life.
If there is anything you can do to help my family and I put Anthony
Goree behind bars, please contact me at teddyl...@hotmail.com.
