Cop Shooting Suspect Sought in PA

Chester City, PA - 8/17/2002

WCAU-TV, Philadelphia

Police thought they were closing in on the man they are looking for in
connection with the shooting of a South Jersey police officer, but
they came up empty again.

Police issued a warrant for Lamar Richard Wyatt, 18, at the corner of
9th and Clover streets in Chester City, Pa., but he was not there. The
community is reportedly Wyatt's hometown.

On Monday, authorities said, police Sgt. Steven Kummer was making a
routine traffic stop when the suspect did not pull over. Kummer chased
the suspect into the Wenonah Garden Apartments and they tussled in a
stairwell.

Investigators said that the suspect grabbed Kummer's gun, a Glock
.40caliber semi-automatic handgun, and pointed it at the officer's
head. Kummer slapped it away and a bullet grazed his ear as it went
into the wall.

A massive search for the shooter involving over 100 area officers
swept through the apartment complex, but they did not find the
suspect. Detectives recovered a gun they believed belongs to the
suspect, but the officer's service gun is still missing.

On Wednesday, Deptford, N.J., police conducted a disappointing manhunt
for Wyatt. He had been spotted in the Jericho neighborhood of
Deptford, but after a massive search, police concluded that he had
eluded them.

Kummer left the hospital Monday night with 14 stitches and got home in
time to celebrate his 4-year-old son's birthday.

Many people, including his parents, believe that Kummer could have
died if it were not for his quick reflexes.

The Sullivan family of Chester City have a special connection to the
search for Wyatt. They allege Wyatt is the man who killed 24-year-old
Steven Sullivan.

They told NBC 10 News that it hurts them all over again every time
they see Wyatt's mugshot on television or in the newspapers.

"I just keep expecting to see him come through that door and hear his
voice, but he's not here," said the victim's sister, Angel Sullivan.

Steven Sullivan was shot and killed on May 17 in Chester City during
an argument.

The family members said that they don't think police did enough to
find Wyatt after Steven's death, and they said they are worried more
tragedy could be in the future.

"I just wish they'd get him off the street before someone else gets
killed," said Shannon Carroll the murder victim's sister.

In an exclusive interview with NBC 10 News, Wyatt's aunt said she
agrees. Antoinette Jackson claimed that she tried to convince her
nephew to surrender after Sullivan's murder.

"I feel the same way, too. If I had called him and had him turn
himself in for the thing that was going on in Chester, I probably
would've saved him from what's going on over in Jersey now," Jackson
said.
