Man dies after fight in parking lot, drive to Lawrence hospital
"They drove 25 miles. That is what made my son die."
So says the mother of a Lynn man who was stabbed in the torso in
Somerville Monday and had to wait for his friends to drive him to a
hospital 25 miles away in Lawrence to get medical care for his bleeding
wounds.
Gary Denton, 25, of Lynn, was pronounced dead soon after his arrival at
Lawrence General Hospital at 2:20 a.m. Monday after he was stabbed in
the parking lot near Good Time Emporium in Somerville, said Emily
LaGrassa, a spokesman for the Middlesex District Attorney's office.
Investigators believe Denton and his friends had run into his attackers
somewhere in Somerville before meeting up again in the Good Time's
parking lot, where he was stabbed during a physical altercation,
LaGrassa said. Somerville Police learned about the incident when
Lawrence General Hospital called to report they had a patient who they
believed had been stabbed in Somerville.
Somerville Police and the DA's office are still investigating the
murder, and LaGrassa would not comment on whether there were any
suspects. No arrests had been made by presstime Wednesday.
After Denton was stabbed, two friends in the car with him, whose names
have not been released, drove him 25 miles to Lawrence General Hospital.
At one point, while Denton was bleeding from the stab wounds, LaGrassa
said his friends got lost in Reading, before "eventually [finding] their
way to the hospital in Lawrence."
Three different hospitals were within four miles of the Sturtevant
Street parking lot where police believe Denton was stabbed, including
Mass. General Hospital, Somerville Hospital and Cambridge Hospital.
Now Denton's mother, Cheryl Denton, says the two people who drove her
son to Lawrence instead of calling 911 "should be" charged with
contributing to a murder.
"If he bled to death [in the parking lot] how is there only little blood
spots?" Denton said. "He was killed in that car ... There should be
contributing to a murder charges.
"They couldn't get to a closer hospital? They drove 25 miles. That is
what made my son die. You wait for 911. There could have been a chance
of him living if they'd waited for 911 ... I'm sorry, friends don't do
that."
Denton's mother said Gary worked as a mechanic and left four children
behind, age 7 and under.
"They are with their mothers now," Cheryl Denton said Tuesday. "His
eldest one is taking it hard."
LaGrassa said the state medical examiner was performing an autopsy on
Denton Monday. No charges have been made against those in the car with
Denton, LaGrassa said.
At noon Monday, Somerville Police and the DA's office had cordoned off a
section of the parking lot near Good Time and were swabbing suspected
blood spots from the stabbing.
Good Time Emporium manager Ray Zonghetti said the bar closed at 1 a.m.
Sunday and that a police detail and a security officer had been on hand
until the building was closed.
Zonghetti said he understood that the stabbing was an incident of road
rage.
LaGrassa would not comment on whether road rage played a part in the
stabbing.
The Lynn Item reported Tuesday that Gary Denton had been arrested in
Lynn in 1996 for attempted murder for allegedly shooting another man on
two separate occasions. Denton was also arrested in Lynn in 2003 on five
counts of assault with a dangerous weapon, the Item reported.
Cheryl Denton said Gary was a "very loving son," that would give the
shirt off his back to anyone.
"This is a death, this is a murder," Cheryl Denton said. "He served his
time for whatever he did."
Police are asking anyone with information regarding the stabbing to call
