CA Gang Members Sentenced to Life for Ambush on Officers

Los Angeles, CA - 4/4/2002

ASSOCIATED PRESS

Three gang members were sentenced to life in prison Wednesday for
trying to kill two police officers in an ambush attack that occurred
after a high-speed chase.

Joseph Aghazadeh, 20; Mario Aleman, 25; and Ramon Maldonado, 22, were
convicted last month of attempting to murder Officers Tom Baker and
Carlos Langarica in July 2000. All three are members of the
Toonerville gang in Los Angeles' Atwater Village neighborhood.

Superior Court Judge Larry P. Fidler sentenced the gang members to two
consecutive life terms plus dozens of additional years for related
offenses, including the use of guns and robbing a passer-by of his
wallet.

He described the actions of the three as "senseless and outrageous
violence" and said gang killings have become so common in Los Angeles
that they seldom attract public attention.

"In our community it's just another gang case, and that's sad," the
judge said.

The three men likely will remain in prison for the rest of their
lives, said Deputy District Attorney Steven J. Ipsen.

Each of the gang members had been offered a plea bargain that required
his testimony and aid in identifying other shooters in the ambush,
Ipsen said. They chose to go to trial because of their loyalty to the
gang, he added.

The incident occurred about 3:30 a.m. on the Fourth of July, when the
three gang members set out to retaliate against another gang they
believed to be responsible for a drive-by shooting in their
neighborhood.

The trio aborted the plan after a passer-by noticed them walking
toward the rival's residence. After robbing the passer-by, the three
cruised the area in a Honda until coming across Baker and Langarica in
a patrol car.

An ensuing chase that reached speeds up to 70 mph ended up in
Toonerville gang territory. The officers testified that someone pushed
a washing machine or dryer into the middle of the street and someone
else shoved a bicycle in front of them in an apparent attempt to stop
the patrol car.

They said they were fired upon from behind while one of the gang
members in the Honda shot at them from the opposite direction.

Baker opened fire and struck Maldonado, who was carrying an assault
pistol.

Backup officers who had been called to the scene helped apprehend
Aleman and Aghazadeh.

Neither of the officers was struck by the gunfire. Maldonado was hit
five times.

Question: what the heck is an "assault pistol"? Anybody have
any idea? Is it a pistol that goes around assaulting other "assault
pistols"?

ken, i believe that they are talking about weapons like the popular tec
9 in this instance. many civilian versions of submachine guns can
easily be made fully functional. the macs 10 and 11, the tec,and the
sterling jump right out. i have read that the mp5 series and the uzi
are pretty difficult. whatever the case, this is pitiful. all of these
45%ers out there and not putting them to good use by 'arresting' these
useless thugs. williams will never be the cop that gates was.

I believe he was pointing out that the media likes to make up their own
definitions of weapons. Nowhere else but the media will you hear terms
thrown around such as "assault pistol."

good thing we have the media to tell us what to think. theyre slightly
above lawyers. i just tried to use the weapons that might apply to the
medias labels. i always thought that all pistols were assault pistols
(high magazine capacity like the rifles). the media probably believes
that the only 'safe' pistol would be thompson contenders.
