Colorado Cop Kills Wife, 2 Kids, Then Himself

AURORA, Colo. (AP) - Relatives of a police officer who apparently shot
his wife and their two
young children to death and then killed himself told police he may have
been upset about the
breakup of his marriage.
The bodies of George Petrillo, 40, his wife Carolyn, 39, and their
children Gabriella, 6, and Knight,
4, were discovered Thursday morning.
All appeared to have been shot in the head and a handgun was found under
Petrillo's body, police
said.
A suicide note was found on a computer in the family's condominium but
its contents were not
disclosed.
An unnamed investigator told The Denver Post that it indicated Petrillo,
a former New York City
Transit officer, was unhappy living in Colorado and was looking for work
in California and Florida.
One of Petrillo's two teenage stepsons, who slept through the shootings,
told officers his mother had
met someone else and was leaving Petrillo, the affidavit said.
Petrillo had been on the Aurora police force since February 1998. From
1981 until 1995 he was a
New York City transit police officer. Most recently, he was assigned to
night shift patrol. He was
off Wednesday night.
"He was a good cop," Petrillo's ex-wife Darlene Smith said from Long
Island. "He made sergeant in
New York and took early retirement after 15 years."
Aurora police spokeswoman Fran Gomez said Carolyn Petrillo had phoned
police in May 2000
after she and her husband got into an argument over the way he was
changing Knight's diaper.
Officers responded but made no arrests, Gomez said.
Residents of the condominium complex said that although they frequently
heard the Petrillos arguing,
they never expected the relationship to end in violence.
"We would hear them fighting," neighbor Linda Hopkins said. "I heard her
yelling "I hate you. I want
a divorce."'
Carolyn Petrillo worked as a ticket agent for Northwest Airlines at
Denver International Airport for
two years. She was studying to become a massage therapist and dreamed of
opening her own
salon.
"She looked at her future with bright eyes," said Sam Toubia,
Northwest's general manager in
Denver.
So far this year, 14 people have died in five family related
murder-suicide cases in Colorado, said
Corinne LeBaron of Project Safeguard, a Denver-based domestic-violence
prevention group.

come into this NG for various postings related to NYC events, questions
about NYC history, NYC information, etc. There are plenty of other NGs that
deal with racism and politics but apparently he feels he must enlighten
everyone to what he perceives as injustices or acts of racism. Sadly,
there are no longer any postings of a NYC GENERAL nature in here. Judging
from the lack of NYC GENERAL postings and replies to his postings, I guess
the net effect of all his postings is to turn everyone away. Seems counter
productive, if you ask me. If you want people to listen you don't annoy
them to make them turn you off. I'm not saying that racism is unimportant
but I am saying such conversations have their place in other NGs. When I
want news I turn to a newschannel and not ESPN nor MTV.
I know he has his fans but perhaps they should all try another NG so that
those who want to discuss these issues (pro and con) can go there to do so.
I'm taking a wild guess here but I think that's the concept behind having
different names for NGs -- to help you differentiate between topics that are
of interest to you.
Of course there will be postings attacking me as well....but since I'm a
minority I can always write those attacks off as racist.
If a posting falls in a forest and there is no one around to read
