BENTONVILLE, Ark. -- Before his jury selection could
begin, former Little Flock police officer Ian Jay
Smith pleaded guilty Tuesday to three counts of rape
in Benton County Circuit Court.
Smith was sentenced to three 30-year terms with the
sentences to run concurrently, and he must serve 21
years before he is eligible for parole.
Smith pleaded not guilty to the charges in July.
In June, Smith was found guilty of possessing a
date-rape drug and sentenced to 20 years in prison,
but that jury could not reach a decision on a rape
charge in the case and the judge declared a mistrial.
Smith was accused of raping a 25-year-old woman on
Dec. 19, 2001, after slipping a blue liquid, called
Verve, into her drink at a Fayetteville club.
Although they couldn't agree on the rape charge,
jurors found Smith guilty of possession of a
controlled substance, GBL, a precursor to the
date-rape drug GHB, and guilty of being a police
officer in possession of an illegal drug.
Prosecutors refiled the first rape charge and filed
two more charges after two women came forward saying
they were raped by Smith, too.
Seems that there is more and more sexual crimes being committed by those that
are there to "protect and serve". I imagine that these women will be in
between a rock and a hard place of they ever get pulled over again...I mean
what do you do? Do you pull over and hope you don't get raped again or do you
flee and get shot?
