why is alt.surrealism filled with "crazy" posts by who i can only
think to name as dim-witted teenagers? And then "witty" retorts by
still more dim-witted teenagers? In the first instance: repetition of
words and boring imagery will do nothing to gain you attention unless
please stop polluting
the group with your
hackneyed posts so that I,
as well, i'm sure, as others can find more suitable threads
please try and remain calm.
in realizing we can't all be ingenious poets, nor amaze the whole of
the world with a borrowed style
stringing words like "bathroom, grass, whore," together while
repeating :zonk zonk zonk.
and as for those specializing in replies: Indeed, perhaps, and like
words carrying a similar degree of pretense are better suited for your
asshole. unless,
by the very slight chance that you find yourself in a petticoat and
top-hat.
In summary, read if you cannot write.
and now i lay myself open to critisism

Actually some are bots. You might be human or you might be bot. A bot is
a robot sorts. A machine based life form rather than an organic based
lifeform. Are you bot or are you human ? Do you dream of becoming a
Cray or do you dream you are a butterfly ? That's the key question.

Now, now, stop putting down the basis of mass production. They are all
well trained potentially useful producers, and thus are assured of
socially useful lives. You cannot criticize that. That's a given.

When the alarm sounds, please try and remain calm. Proceed to the exits
in an orderly manner. Follow the directions of your assigned bot, who
will provide asistance as might be required. Once outside the premises,
you will be required to jump up and down madly and to scream and shout
until directed otherwise.

I wonder if bots dream of having assholes ? It is somewhat like the
question as to whether androids dream of electric sheep, but more
crucial. When a bot takes a shit....

I suggest putting your clothes back on.

I don't necessarily disagree with what you say, but only because you are
not
that clear about what iis to be said. It may be true NOW that the group
mainly attracts blitherers and non-sequitor obsessives, but it wasn't
always
this way. I suppose much can be laid at the door of the usual common
misconceptions as to what surrealism is, with the popular opinion
relying
too heavily on nonsense and the merely odd. But I don't see that your
comments rise much above those you are complaining of at the moment, and
so
I invite you (without begging) to clarify exactly what it is you find
lacking here, rather than only disparaging the rags of what is left. A
positive statement in effect.

Criticism if there was something to criticize. But, really I would
prefer to lay you down with a comfortable pillow, and explain
to you various road maps and soup recipes before extruding your
nostrils with a wrench. And believe it or not one can write well
in this position. After bleaching your tongue in acid, I would
shake hands with you and say welcome to the club and congratulate
you on putting up such a good fight. And then we would have Elag
throw your bleeding torso to the lions. After they kick it back to
us in disgust, we would be forced to deal with you in more prosaic
terms: as in the drama of old western films, but without all the
good karma floating around.

while not meaning to critizice your writing, 'fum', i did find parts of
your
message tricky to follow, and i hope i haven't misread your comments.
several thoughts spring to mind with regards to what you have said:-
there are many barren, forgotten newsgroups out there. i've seen
alt.surrealism go through some sparse times, -it's disappointing looking
over a favourite newsgroup only to discover that the most up to date
post is
several days old. i say, let the 'dross' (if you think it is indeed
dross)
in, you can always stop reading if it's not to your taste.
everyone has their own reasons to post. everyone has their own idea of
what
should be posted, - and you'd be hard pressed to find agreement amongst
the
contributors as to the 'correct' definition of what is surreal (or, more
to
the point, what can be considered a 'valid' post).
there are those who clearly like to provoke discussion, those who post
their
work so that it can be enjoyed by others, yet others who merely wish to
comment on what they see. for my own part, i've never claimed that any
of
my own contributions are anything more than humourous, pseudo-surreal
pieces
intended to provide a newsgroup 'tea-break' (or coffee-break for the US
readers). often, my comment on a particular post is in the form of a
list,
or a mechanism for creating random phrases. i do this as a way of
taking an
oblique look at a topic. this idea isn't part of definite, stated,
surreal
methodology (as far as i'm aware), but i think it is appropriate to the
newsgroup in that it IS comment (albeit in an indirect form).
so what if there are people out there who like to write poetry in an odd
manner that they consider surreal (and you don't)? the fact is, it's a
contribution. the beauty of a newsgroup is that it is not a single
conversation. it is many conversations that you can 'dip' into if you
wish.
newsgroups don't get full-up. why not allow people to speak?
has the meaning of 'surrealism' been subverted, misunderstood,
corrupted?
i'm sure it has. does that mean a post that conforms to the 'wrong' idea
of
surrealism is not valid? are you SURE such posts have no worth?
- and isn't that a valid topic for discussion on this group?
to summarize, i think it is far better to see a few 'poor' posts (a
matter
of taste) than to see no posts at all. i think it is better to see
inventive and unusual material, wether it is strictly appropriate to the
group or not, than to see a handful of posts sticking rigidly to a
doctrine.
do remember that by posting something, you are leaving yourself open to
comment (good and bad). i think making a contibution of any sort is to
be
applauded.
IMHO
