************************ THIS WEEK: ATP TOURNAMENT IN LYON ***************************
Well here we are..in France....like it? :) Do do I! Well let's enjoy some tennisaction
shall we?? A report is yours..
LYON, France (AP) Pete Sampras bounced back to top form at the Lyon Grand Prix on
Thursday, firing 10 aces in a 6-2, 6-4 second-round victory over Australian Todd
Woodbridge!! :)
The world's No. 1 ranked player, who struggled to beat fellow American Todd
Martin in three sets in Wednesday's first round, was back to his efficient best as
he reached the quarterfinals.
Sampras appeared to be in trouble until breaking Martin's serve in the final game of
the match.
But with the score at 15-30, the world's top-ranked player fired a stunning
crosscourt forehand stroke before Martin double-faulted to hand the match to
Sampras.
"It was a really tough match and I was a bit lucky to win," said a relieved Sampras.
"I felt much better today," he said. ``I could see much better and was hitting the
ball more cleanly. Todd Martin also has a bit more power in his serve (than
Woodbridge.)"
"It's rather a long time for me without going back home but I'm ready to do this to
retain my ranking and break the record... this is my main goal."
Sampras admitted he is not ready to make a similar sacrifice to win the French
Open, the only Grand Slam tournament to have eluded him.
The American is leading the world men's ranking by a good margin but he also has
more points to defend than his rivals.
"I have a very strong motivation and I'm ready to face a big fight against Rafter
and Rios. Both of them are dangerous and I'm sure they will not give up before the
end of the season," Sampras said.
No. 3 seed Marcelo Rios also moved easily to the last eight, beating Nicolas
Escude of France 6-2, 6-3 in 59 minutes.
Alex Corretja of Spain recovered from a tough second-set loss to beat Romanian
Andrei Pavel 6-4, 2-6, 6-3.
In the next round, Corretja will face surprise quarterfinalist Olivier Delaitre.
The 31-year-old French qualifier, ranked a lowly 227th, lost the first set to Italy's
Gianluca Pozzi, but stormed back to take 10 consecutive games and win 1-6, 6-0, 6-4.
Germany's Tommy Haas also came back after losing the first set and beat
defending champion Fabrice Santoro 2-6, 6-3, 7-5.
"My opponent was very consistent and he served better than I did at the decisive
moments," Santoro said. "During the first set, I felt comfortable but during the
second and the third Haas raised the level of his game. He was stronger than me."
Unseeded Haas made a decisive break to lead 6-5 in the last set and wrapped the
match up in the following game.
On Wednesday, Patrick Rafter of Australia cruised to a 6-3, 6-3 victory over Hicham
Arazi of Morocco. Rafter already has qualified for next month's ATP Tour World
Championship in Hannover, Germany.
The 25-year-old Rafter's quarterfinal opponent will be South African Wayne Ferreira, who
posted a 7-6 (7-3), 6-2 victory over No. 7 Cedric Pioline of France. Pioline was a
finalist here in 1992 and 1993.
First prize is $101,500.

********************** THIS WEEK: ATP TOURNAMENT IN OSTRAVA ***************************
Well and now on to our SECOND ATP tourney...let's get our butts over to Ostrava! :) A
first round report..
OSTRAVA, CZECH REPUBLIC (TICKER) -- Second-seeded American Andre Agassi advanced to the
second round along with No. 3 and defending champion Karol Kucera of Slovakia, and two
other seeds moved on to the third round today at the $975,000 Czech Indoor tennis event.
Agassi bounced Denmark's Kenneth Carlson, 6-4, 6-4, to continue his bid to qualify for
next month's ATP Tour World Championship in Hannover, Germany.
Kucera had some trouble, losing the first set 4-6 before dropping Daniel Vacek of the
Czech Republic, 7-6 (7-3), 6-3. Kucera is also looking to clinch a place at Hannover,
and faces Ukranian Andrei Medvedev in second-round action.
Advancing to the third round were seventh-seeded Thomas Enqvist and eighth seed Thomas
Johansson, both of Sweden. Enqvist spotted Bohdan Ulihrach the first set 6-7 (4-7)
before winning the next two, 6-2, 6-4. Johansson ousted Jiri Novak, 6-4, 7-5.
Medvedev defeated Sjeng Schalken, 6-0, 6-4, in unseeded first-round play while Swedish
qualifier Nicklas Kulti outlasted Marat Safin, 7-6 (7-4), 7-6 (7-1), in second-round
action.
On Tuesday, fourth seed Yevgeny Kafelnikov of Russia bounced back from his first-round
loss last week in Vienna by stopping Australian Richard Fromberg.
However, two of the hardest servers in tennis were first-round losers Tuesday. Slovakian
qualifier Jan Kroslak bounced fifth seed Goran Ivanisevic of Croatia and 1996 champion
David Prinosil of Germany upended sixth seed and U.S. Open finalist Mark Philippoussis
of Australia.
Home favorite and top seed Petr Korda of the Czech Republic was eliminated by Russian
teenager Marat Safin on Monday.
Agassi, who was just 12-12 and ranked out of the top 100 last year, is currently fifth
in the race for Hannover and is ranked sixth in the world. Eight players qualify for the
Tour World Championship.
A winner of four titles this year, Agassi is coming off consecutive finals appearances.
He lost in the final of the Swiss Indoors two weeks ago to Tim Henman and fell to
Marcelo Rios at the Grand Slam Cup in Munich the week before.
He failed in his bid to win his third singles title of 1998 when he lost to top-ranked
Pete Sampras in the final of the CA Tennis Trophy in Vienna on Sunday.
TODAY'S REPORT..
OSTRAVA, Czech Republic, Oct 22 (Reuters) - Andre Agassi strolled past Sweden's Magnus
Norman into the quarter-finals of the Czech Indoors on Thursday but defending champion
Karol Kucera crashed out.
Agassi, whose remarkable comeback has seen him rise from outside the top 100 to
sixth in the world rankings over the past year, beat the 1997 runner-up Norman 6-2 7-5.
The American second seed broke Norman's serve in the first game of the first set
and again in the fifth.
The second set proved tougher but Agassi eventually achieved the break he
needed in the eighth game.
Agassi, the main attraction in the $1 million tournament, faces Swedish eighth seed
Thomas Johansson in the next round.
Third seed Kucera went down in three sets to Ukraine's Andrei Medvedev.
Russia's Yevgeny Kafelnikov was another high-profile loser.
The fourth seed appeared to be in control against Martin Damm of the Czech
Republic, winning the first set 6-3, before eventually losing in three sets 3-6 6-3 6-2.
Damm plays Zimbabwean qualifier Wayne Black, who beat Germany's David
Prinosil on Thursday, in the quarters.

qualifier Katarina Studenikova in the third round.
Schnyder, seeking her sixth title of the year, was surprised by Magui Serna of Spain,
7-6 (7-3), 6-4...you will like this result Caz! :)
Second-seeded American Monica Seles upended Austria's Barbara Schett, 6-3, 6-4, while
Conchita Martinez of Spain, the 1995 winner, made short work of Nadejda Petrova, 6-0,
6-0...wow!! EASY CONCHITA! Ha ha! :)
In other seeded action, No. 5 Mary Pierce of France defeated Belgium's Sabine Appelmans,
6-2, 6-2, and seventh seed Sandrine Testud posted a 6-4, 6-3 victory over Natasha
Zvereva.
Studenikova moved on with a 6-3, 7-5 victory over Chanda Rubin. Also advancing to the
third round was Silvia Farina of Italy, who beat Henrieta Nagyova, 6-3, 6-1.
On Wednesday, Anna Kournikova, who first came to the attention of the tennis community
when she played in a juniors exhibition here in 1991, fell to Farina in three sets.
Williams, playing for the first time as a top seed this week, had few problems with
Russia's second-ranked women's tennis player. She continued her fine year, which has
seen her move from No. 22 to No. 5 in the world this season.
Anna Kournikova double-faulted 20 times and was upset by Silvia Farina of Italy in the
Kremlin Cup on Wednesday and heard angry whistles from her hometown fans.
The Moscow-born Kournikova lost 7-6 (7-5), 6-4, 6-1.
Kournikova's loss was her first since early 1997 to a player ranked outside the
world's top 15.
A week ago in Zurich, the 17-year-old Russian committed 17 double faults to lose
in the first round of the European Championships.
Kournikova, who now lives and trains in Florida, dropped out of the top 10 after
tearing ligaments in her right thumb. She is ranked 12th on the WTA tour.
"I'm tired and nervous, that's why my serve was so bad," she said after the match.
"I haven't been playing for two months and it was difficult to find new tactics on
the court. But I'm glad I'm finishing the year ranked 12th."
Second-seeded Seles downed Barbara Schett of Germany 6-3, 6-4.
First prize is $165,000.

$ SECTION 3: TENNISNEWS FROM ALL OVER THE WORLD $
$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$
Well so much for the tennis action..now let's check out some tennisnews shall we??
******************************* IN FOCUS: TIM HENMAN **********************************
VIENNA, Oct 20 (Reuters) - Britain's Tim Henman faced various questions after
losing to Pete Sampras last week but the toughest ones remain unanswered.
The 24-year-old, whose calm and courtesy mask an iron determination, lost in the
quarter-finals of the CA-Trophy to the American world number one but on
Monday climbed to his highest-ever world ranking of ninth.
He was 10th last summer but it did not last.
How much higher can "Tiger Tim" climb now and has he the consistency to stay
up there this time?
"Tim has just gone back into the top 10 having been there for a week in August,"
his compatriot Tony Pickard, one of Britain's greatest coaches, said at the weekend.
"But it's no good being there for a few days. You have to get there and stay there
for a year, two years, even three."
Henman, just 25 points ahead of 10th-ranked Russian Yevgeny Kafelnikov, is
adamant that he can go further.
The Oxford man has 2,488 points and has eighth-ranked Slovak Karol Kucera
(2,615) next in his sights.
"I think you've got to set your standards to the very top," he told Reuters in
Vienna. "If I can continue playing the way I have the last couple of months, I can
go a lot higher.
"When I'm on the court, I'm out there to win and that's the most important thing.
"I'm playing for myself and not for anybody else. I'm not playing for the fans, I'm
not playing for my country, I'm playing purely for myself."
Before Vienna, the quiet Briton had won 18 of his previous 21 matches, taken
back-to-back titles in Tashkent and Basle.
Henman was on a roll and his training partner Sampras hailed him, saying: "I
regard Tim as the next generation."
The great spell of form started when he successfully defended his title at the
President's Cup in Tashkent last month, dispatching top seed Kafelnikov in
straight sets.
He then picked his way through a world class field at the Swiss indoor
championship before claiming the scalp of former world number one Andre Agassi
in the final.
"It was the best week of my career so far," he said.
Three-times Wimbledon champion John McEnroe has tipped him as one of the top
players lining up to take over from 27-year-old Sampras when the American retires.
It is a mark of respect that Sampras chooses Henman as a practice partner while on
tour, a relationship which the Briton says has benefited him a great deal.
A gifted all-round sportsman who also enjoys playing golf and soccer, Henman
has tennis in his blood.
His grandfather was a regular competitor at Wimbledon and his parents are both
keen players.
He began playing tennis when he was just three and it soon became clear that he
had world-class potential.
From the age of 11 he was groomed for the top at the David Lloyd tennis school in
London and turned professional in 1993.
When the England soccer team was knocked out of the World Cup this summer,
the nation pinned its hopes of a sports victory on "Tiger Tim" becoming the first
Briton to win Wimbledon since Fred Perry in 1936.
Again, it was Sampras who denied Henman, knocking him out in the semifinal
before going on to win his fifth title.
Henman's friendly rivalry for the British number one spot with Greg Rusedski, on
the mend from an ankle injury, adds spice to his chase for glory and Henman has
learned to cope with the attention of the media, be it good or bad.
"If anything, it has a positive effect," he said. ``There very definitely have been
times when I've gone out there to try to prove people wrong."
Canadian-born Rusedski rose to world number four in October last year and is now 13th.
In London, Henman has trained with former Wimbledon champion Stefan Edberg,
whose serve-and-volley game is a model for his own. Henman says his serve has
become more consistent over the past few months and his movement has improved.
He is otherwise as calm as ever.
"My attitude is reserved most of the time," Henman says. "I think there are times
when on the surface you can be one thing but the people who really know you
know that you're feeling something different."
Henman accounts for his improved performance as a result of maturity, a coming
of age at the end of June when he started playing with real consistency at last.
"I think that at the beginning of the year I was perhaps a little bit naive and I
wasn't playing to my strengths. I wasn't aggressive enough on the court and
stayed on the baseline too much," he said.
"Suddenly, for no real apparent reason everything just clicked."
******************************* DAVIS CUP FINAL IN MILAN ******************************
MILAN, Oct 22 (Reuters) - Milan welcomed Davis Cup tennis back to the city for
the first time in more than 30 years on Thursday, after beating off nine other cities
to host the final against Sweden.
"This is a great coup for Milan to be hosting the final and a great source of pride
for the city. Italy has been waiting 18 years for this," Mayor Gabriele Albertini told
a news conference at the city hall.
The last time Italy got to a final was in 1980 when they lost in Czechoslovakia.
They won their sole title in 1976 against Chile but have lost all their other five
Davis Cup final appearances. This final marks the first time they will have home
advantage.
Milan has not hosted a Davis Cup match since 1965.
The Italian Tennis Federation selected Milan as the venue ahead of nine other
cities including Turin, which had been touted by many as favourite.
The final will take place from December 4-6 on a specially laid indoor clay court in
the Forum di Assago in Milan's southwest suburbs.
The venue has a capacity of 11,000 and demand for tickets has already exceeded
30,000, officials said.
"There has not been a Davis Cup match in Milan for 33 years. It's a big challenge
and we haven't got a lot of time to prepare, but Milan well deserves the choice of
venue and we will try to do our very best," said Francesco Ricci Bitti, chairman of
the Federation and head of the Davis Cup committee.
Italy reached the final by surprising the United States 4-1 in the semifinals.
Sweden, the holders, beat Spain.
******************************* IN FOCUS: DAVENPORT ***********************************
ZURICH, Oct 19 (Reuters) - Lindsay Davenport had no plans to become world
number one, but now she has no intention of abandoning the position.
The U.S. Open champion finished her first week on top of the world rankings by
winning her sixth tournament of the season, successfully defending her European
indoor title on Sunday against fellow-American Venus Williams.
"Making it to number one was never an obsession of mine," said Davenport. "I
never thought I could get to number one.
"But my goal now is to stay number one."
While the 22-year-old's aim is to retain the top spot as long as she can, her
immediate goal is to finish the year with the number one ranking.
With just a handful of tournaments remaining, Davenport's only challenger for
year-end honours is Swiss teenager Martina Hingis. The 1996 Olympic champion
took over from Hingis as number one last Monday, becoming only the eighth
player since the world rankings began in 1975 to reach the summit.
Davenport's victory on Sunday, the 19th of her career, provided the American with
a cushion in the rankings, allowing her the luxury of pulling out of this week's
WTA event and a chance to rest for what she sees as a double tournament
showdown with the Swiss youngster.
"I've got two more tournaments until the end of the year and I hope to play well in
both of them and end the year number one," said Davenport. "It all depends on
how the next few weeks in Philadelphia and New York go.
"I think it's all going to come down to the Chase championships in New York.
"It's not a battle, but it's going to be fun competing against Martina to decide who
is number one."
While Hingis is at her home near Zurich resting a sprained ankle, Davenport will be
doing the same for a bothersome sore arm at her home in New Port Beach,
California.
After her U.S. Open victory Davenport returned home to celebrations. This time
she's hoping for a little quieter reception.
"I'm just going to relax and not play tennis for a week and try to get ready for the
last few tournaments," said Davenport.
"After the U.S. Open there was a lot more attention so I don't know what to expect
when I get back.
"I'm just going to try and do whatever I want for a week so I can just relax after
these crazy couple of months.
"Hopefully I'll just fit back into town and no one will bother me too much or make
too big of a stink."
While comfortable with the media and attention, Davenport enjoys her time away
from the spotlight.
So much so that she has been criticised for her easy going approach to the sport.
"Because I didn't think I could get to number one, people said I had a lack of
confidence," said Davenport. "But I played tennis because I enjoy it. The way
things have worked out is mind-blowing.
"I've been two for a long time and being one is a big deal but it's not like I went
from 10 to one in one week.
"I don't think the players have any more respect for me now that I'm number one,
hopefully they repect me for my results over the last couple of years."
