I'm looking to buy a few toys for my ETX-125 and thought I'd probe the
group to see if anybody can suggest a good (reputable) dealer with great
prices.

I'm seeking out a #887 tripod, the #1247 focuser, a set of #895
vibration pads, and a #676 dew shield. I've already checked eBay,
half.com, etc. (where I usually can find a deal to be had), but no joy
on these items.

So far the best prices have been from Anacortes (buytelescopes.com), but
having had no dealings with them I'm wondering if anybody has opinions
to offer (good and bad).

Can anyone provide opinions based on experience or suggest an alternate
supplier?

Since I'm buying about $500 worth of kit, I'm hoping to find someone to
sweeten the pot slightly by knocking a bit of the total and offering to
pay for shipping.

Regards
Tim

I have makeshift vibration pads that cost a third of the Meade/Celestron
versions. I got mine at Walmart. What I got was gel filled wrist rests for
using a mouse. Small, cheap and if I leave them at a site I'm out $5.00 a
pad.

How do you use vibration pads? Where do they go? (Sorry, I'm new at this!)

Thanks!

Dave,

They go under the feet of the tripod. They help cut down/eliminate
vibrations transmitted through the tripod either from walking around the
scope or even from focusing and stuff.

I see. That makes sense. I bought my ETX-125 used late last year and it came
with a Promaster 6800 tripod, which is think is designed more for
photography than hanging the 125 on it. The previous owner made a special
mount to attach the scope to a Bogen head. Anyway, I managed to set it up
twice before the weather got too cold (Chicago!) so I didn't really notice
much in the way of vibrations coming from walking around. I'll have to keep
this in mind -- the weather is warming up a bit and I hope to start using it
again soon!

Thanks for the advice!

Thanks for the tip -- I did do quite a bit of shopping around but I
hadn't checked them.

I made the purchase from Anacortes ( buytelescopes.com ). Most dealers
I checked had the same prices for all the components I wanted, but
Anacortes seemed to beat the prices by about $10/item. To be fair, I
looked up the items on the Scopetronix website and noticed that they
post prices which are on par with Anacortes.

Now that I've got all the toys setup (and yes, the rainy weekend arrived
just when my order did - go figure), I must say I don't regret it. At
$349 for a tripod (which I wanted because the original Deluxe Field
Tripod was driving me nuts with vibration) I was a bit worried that it
would really make the difference. It DEFINITELY makes a difference.

I haven't had it outside at night, but I did re-train the drives during
the day and noticed that the images have virtually NO vibration. I can
now do actually do simple things like 'focus' -- which were previously a
real test of determination and patience.

Thanks!
Tim
