Go to Start>Run.
type in Charmap
Hopefully Character Map will load up. Choose the character you want, then
look down at the bottom right corner, it shows you how to bring it up in
typing... note, it's just plain ALT and the number, no control. For
example alt 0174 will bring up a registered mark: ® , or ALT 0169 brings up
copyright ©.

klaatu:
i can get some of them from Windoze
by going to bottom left of the screen,
clicking on "start" - then when the pop-up shows,
click "run".

when the "run" window shows, type in:
" charmap.exe ", then " ok ".

then the character-map will show.
if you click "font" you'l then see a whole flock of stuff
to choose from.

pick your letter, click on it, then got to the
"characters to copy" box, click "select",
then "copy" - at which point the box will disappear,
but you can print the character by clicking "paste".

problem is that only some of these fonts actually transfer,
like this one §
others just print out some off-the-wall characters.

i know i'm missing something simple, but don't know what.
anyway, this should help somehow.

Buddy, the subject of character-mapping

No wonder if you don't get it -
it's c-o-m-p-l-i-c-a-t-e-d.

And I can't help you, sorry, 'cause I don't know how your system's set up

Basically, the code you type in after pressing and holding the alt key is
the ASCII (American Standard Code for Information Interchange, see
http://webopedia.internet.com/TERM/A/ASCII.html) code for the relevant
letter. When you use Charmap make sure that it is set to the same font as
you're typing in, e.g. Times New Roman, otherwise things'll get confusing.
If you're using it in newsgroup, then you must remember that you're typing
in fixed font, so you *must* set charmap to use the font your newsreader
software uses. If, on the other hand, you're using a wordprocessor then you
can choose characters from different Fonts to copy and paste into your
document (remembering to change the font of that character in the wordproc.
to the same font as is in Charmap)

Do understand?

Just means it's not installed. Make sure you've got a copy of the windows
disk to hand, then go to control panel. Under Add / Remove programs click
on the windows setup tab, double click on System tools. Check the box
besides Character Map, then OK all the way out.
