Question:
Why is this taking so long?

Gallery was Russ' area, although I don't see him doing anything anytime
soon.
Majin is recoding the entire site *by hand*. This is not a quick process.
He had to learn nested tables to do it. They are not just text changes. He
is not using a packaged web design software that does all the coding for
him.
What color should the background be?
--Joey
Copy all the <head> <meta> <body color> tags.
Upload the graphics, update your code with the names.
Now, is that too hard? :O)

This is how I always design sites, it makes the most efficient .html
files. If you need help with any of these, as always, let me know :-).

That's because you weren't the fortunate soul that was graced with the

Besides, I never mentioned anything about *my* site, which I also did

Can you be more specific yet again?
1st.
It takes way too fucking long to load, and the load screen is shit! Add a
skip button.
2nd.
The Flash *lol* is ugly, the logo is ugly and the graphics are ugly.
3rd.
Your menu's suck ass, I doubt that anyone with less then 800x600 would even

It's certainly not necessary, and it's probably not permanent. My
web-design guy is learning flash and experimenting with our site. I can
tell him he has to remove it and he will, that's my decision (or I can
remove it). But if he decides he wants to keep it, I'll have him add an
option. For instance, you can enter the "Flashed Site" or the
"non-Flashed Site", your choice.

You made six claims and one of them was somewhat decent. Not a great

Not true.. he actually began learning it on his own only recently.
Most of the sites we create are business sites and/or ecommerce and have
little use for Flash. Learning Flash is more of a hobby for him.

You seem to be under the impression that I don't create the site
because I am incapable. This would be like condemning Steve Jobs
because he didn't personally write the code for the MacOS.
I do not own the site.. it is not *mine*, per se. I am the President
of the corporation that does own the site. As the person in charge of
organizing and maintaining a corporation, it is not my job to design
websites, and it has no reflection on my capabilities. This is what
employees are for.
As far as my abilities, I'd be so confident as to claim that I am more
proficient with HTML, CGI (both Perl and VB), and JavsScript than anyone
else in this group.
> Sorry Terry, no machine, even a Mac, can give people artistic skills, > aint that a bitch! :^)
Depending on the type of site being designed, artistic abilities may be
a moot point. I will be the first to claim that I am not an artist. I
am familiar with the software, but I can't draw worth crap.
And you obviously learned your manners in a pig-sty.

I didn't hire him to do Flash.

I disagree. The opening isn't perfect, but I like his small Flash
animation(s) within the site. And obviously he's getting better. You
should have seen what was there two weeks ago.

What have you based that on? Simply the opening screen?

You have very little information with which to base your judgement. He
designed my desktop (see on the website I've designated for desktops)
which is what we install standard on to new systems. I think it's
excellent.

Memorizing code and being proficient in its use are two totally

See, you're missing the point, if I judge him on the site, so will everyone
else, but when they judge it - you will be judged with him. = Not good for
your company.
> Memorizing code and being proficient in its use are two totally

Missing the point again, ey? Coding skills have nothing to do with *art*
skills, do you understand now?
--
http://www.shinygraphics.com
> Let him get better on his own, that's what they have schools and
> internships for.
That's a contradictory statement. If he were attending schools and
internships to learn Flash, he wouldn't be getting better on his own.
I enjoy letting him use the site for practicing, because that means he
practices creating content that may be used for the site. It's
generally not a big deal, since the site itself generates little
revenue. Most of our sales and consultations come through word-of-mouth
and referrals, and our reputation is known. At this point in time, the
site has little impact on the business overall.
> The site in whole, not just the Flash.
I happen to enjoy the layout and design of the site. And considering
that it is my decision (as you've pointed out), that seems to be what
matters.
> > You have very little information with which to base your judgement.
> See, you're missing the point, if I judge him on the site, so will

I agree.. and most others who have seen the site agree with my opinion
of it. Very few people visit the site, as it is not a concern at this
time.
If there comes a time when the site is used more heavily for our
business, we will begin relying on people's opinions such as yours.
> > Memorizing code and being proficient in its use are two totally
> > seperate things.
> Missing the point again, ey? Coding skills have nothing to do with
> *art* skills, do you understand now?
And artistic skills have little to do with creating a site, at least,
the sites we generally create.
You may be used to creating sites with simply HTML and graphical
content. That's great for a static site that's used simply for
referrence. When you get into sites that involve eCommerce, coding
becomes *essential*. We also create sites for our customers to update
themselves, customers that have never heard of FTP. We build web-based
editors for them so they can add press-release articles or change other
content without having to consult us.
With higher-end, larger, professional sites, the coding is much more
important than the artistic aspect.
See, anyone can code (see alt-teens.org - it shows that the designer only
has coding skills). On the other hand, view something like this
(halflife.net) were the designer has more art skills. / Most of the time you
will need 2 designers/ one coder and one art guy. Perhaps you should hire
another person?~

HTML is not coding (that's what alt-teens.org is, right?), so it
doesn't reveal any of the designer's coding skills.
If anyone can code, why don't you code something and post it so I can
see? How about a JavaScipt Chat? You have to create the client, and
have it establish a TCP or UDP connection (your choice) to a server app
that you also have to write, making sure to monitor for new messages all
the time.
Or how about an eCommerce Site? You have to keep a user database so
that return customers don't have to re-enter their information, they can
login with a name and password. Create a database of items available
for purchase, and a search engine that will allow the user to find the
item they want; searchable by category, product name, or keywords. They
also be able to view their "shopping cart" at any point in time, and/or
proceed to the purchase. Then you have to accept a payment method
(check, credit card, etc), and have the site automatically email them a
confirmation notice with a link that they can click on that will bring
them back to the site so they can check the real-time status of their
order.
Can you do that? Somehow I don't think so.

You can't?

The desktop is very nice.. it's a matter of opinion, subjective. What
you think is nice, I think is crap. So what's the difference? The
difference is that *I* choose based on what I like, not what you like..
and that works out very well for me.
> With all the claims you had of being able to do what I do on my MAC,
> as easily as I do, I have to wonder why you lay EVERYTHING out on that

Everything? I have only a few icons on the far left-hand side of the
desktop. "Everything" that I use all the time opens up when my computer
starts up; that's how I set it up because that's how I like it.

You may want to look again. I have only a few icons on my desktop.
That is hardly all of my software.

I'm not claiming that I would win that one. My priority is not to have
the best-looking desktop.. maybe when I was 12 it may have been.

It's all personal preference. For you, hotkeys may be easier; for
someone else, double-clicking an icon.

I'm not confused.. I'm very clear. A "real" website is a website that
exists in reality, as opposed to a fictional website portrayed on
television, for instance. And since I understand exactly how they are
designed, your statement is false.

Better for what? Your site serves a purpose. Our site serves an
entirely different purpose, and it serves that purpose well. If we
wanted our site to be "pretty", or we were interested in designing such
sites, I would have hired someone that knows how to make pretty sites.
We don't care about pretty sites.. pretty-site designing doesn't make
money. Most people that design such sites do it for themselves; they
don't hire someone else to do it.

That's all you've been doing is commenting on it. Not that I'm

You're right about that.. because I did that stuff when I was 12.

??
Coding has little to do with *web-design* because most designers will use
Dreamweaver/Fireworks to create a site then give it a to a code-monkey like
your-self to clean up the code.
See coders don't understand design, they only understand coding, coders
don't do anything but clean up the designers code and make code that the
designer requests.
OK?

Heh.. coding is extremely *difficult* to learn. Since you don't know
anything about coding, I also wouldn't expect you to make an accurate
assessment of it's difficulty.
> Coding has little to do with *web-design* because most designers will > use Dreamweaver/Fireworks to create a site then give it a to a

You seem to be under the impression that the term "web-design" means
only the *look* of the site, and this is not the case. In that sense, I
understand what you are saying. But commercial sites have much more to
them than the way they look. The code behind the site is what counts in
cases such as that, and the actual look of the site becomes a trivial
matter.
> See coders don't understand design, they only understand coding,

The graphic artist and coder often work together to create the site,
one is not a subsidiary of the other. But rather, both of those people
(or a group of those people) work for the client.
> > I'll explain every line if you'd like.

He is handicapped, in a wheel-chair, has little use of his hands, and
types with a pen in his mouth. I don't think he'd be eager to type that
much.
> > You cannot get programs that will write code such as that for you.

> BETTER than you have.
You seem to be off-base on what we're discussing. We are not talking
about pretty websites. Obviously you can get programs that will assist
you with that as opposed to writing HTML. For anyone that is fluent in
HTML, this is of little advantage. For anyone that doesn't understand
how to layout a site, such programs will not be of much use.
As for search engines, eCommerce, auto-updates, and quite a few other
things.. you cannot get programs that will write these for you. You
can, however, find free source that other people have written; but
that's only useful if you already know how to code and want to save
time.
> ANY of derFie's site's are WAY BeTTer than the one you posted.
If you're serious about that, why don't we take a poll and settle it?
First, we need a somewhat objective set of criteria and a grading

Your fantasies are irrelevant to the subject. :^)
First the designer designs the site, then he lets the code-monkey do the
rest. That's how it works, not the other way around.

Navigable. The important thing.
