Most newsgroups have some sort of policy about the posting of binaries,
usually prohibiting the posting of binaries except in newsgroups
created specifically for binaries. This is done because binaries are
usually quite large and therefore timeconsuming (and expensive, if you
have to pay for you phone/internet connection) to download. It is quite
acceptable, however, to place a TEXT message in a newgroup announcing
that a binary ia available via FTP or WWW.

I don't actually know what policy, if any, this group has but I hope it
is that binaries are not allowed. I certainly haven't found any binary
that has been forced upon me here to be useful, and I resent the
download time and the time spent in deleting them from my disk
afterwards. Of course, I'm happy that you've found the binaries useful,
but couldn't you have got them as easily from a website, once you knew
where they were?

Cheers,
Daniel James

I would imagine that binaries would be posted to
alt.satellite.tv-binaries, with a message here to say they are there.

Perhaps we need an alt.technology.smartcards.binaries then, because I have
no interest in satellite cards, and wouldn't look there.

I think some people are being a little unfair to the guy who posted
WinExplorer!! Yes, he did technically break the rules, but he didn't do it
for his own personal gain... I guess he just wanted to share his proggy
with the masses, in the most effective way!!

We should all be grateful to the software authors who want to share their
creations with us... FREE OF CHARGE!!

But that's exactly what the binary groups are for! It's not a question
of technically breaking rules, it's policy.
