It's funny that back in the day when HTML was just over the horizon,
the fanciest protocol was gopher, and "network administrators" were
so naive "security" was totally unknown, you could use who and finger
to access any university or unix mainframe on the planet, and the most
that could happen is you might get a message that "outsiders aren't
authorized access, but go ahead anyway because there's no way to stop
you"... you had to have an account to gain processor time, but could
at least see who was logged on to the system and browse through menus
of available services...by typing in the right SMTP commands and IP
addresses I used to access my home email from a unix workstation at
work that was supposed to be used for filling out time cards, at a
time when a "firewall" was still a thick fireproof construction that
separated rooms and corridors in a commercial building...
